Rio de Janeiro is an absolutely amazing city, built between mountains and surrounded by Atlantic rainforest and the ocean, it is so nice. The views from the top of Christ the redeemer and sugar loaf mountain were out of this world. We were there for carnival and the "worlds biggest party" is a pretty accurate assesment.
We arrived in Rio on the morning of the 14th February and spent the first day relaxing on the beach and looking for good bars around Copacabana. At around six oclock the rest of the group arrived and With all 26 other gap volunteers present the party was on. We heard from Ricardo and Pedro (the two guys working at our hostel) that Lapa was the place to be and they were not wrong. With endless bars and night clubs, amzaing live music, thousands of people in the streets and very cheap drinks (like 40p for beers and Caipirinhas) Lapa was definitely party HQ for Rio, especially on the last night when i was intoxicated to say the least
CARNIVAL: During my week in Rio there were constant parades and endless street parties day and night though Copacabana and Ipanema. It was pretty much impossible to avoid the partys. Rio de Janeiro during carnival is definitely no place for the old. The sambadrome is a must as the parades are amazing, you cant see this anywhere else in the world. Hundreds of huge floats and thousands of outrageous costumes combined with a very high dosage of alcohol made it a night to remember (and it was all night, like 10 untill 6 in morning). (to be continued in a rush)
