I spent only four nights in Sao Paulo as Part of my gap orientation which involved athree day language course and a lot of drinking. What I saw of Sao Paulo was so nice, however I was staying in comfortable hotel in an upmarket part of town called Higienopolis. On the first day we passed through a poorer area and it was terrible, there was a lot of obvious prostitution, homeless people and serious poverty. In Sao Paulo the rich are very rich and the poor are very poor. The city centre in was reaaly beautiful and has a lot of culture and history. There is so much to see and do but watch your pockets as there is always thieves around.
The night life was pretty special, no where was rubbish. All the bars serve bottled beer in Champayne buckets of ice and often have life music (normally just one guy with a guitar, but still pretty lush). The night clubs are really expensive, probably because I went in a big group of English people, but really good aswell. The 12th February was the start of the brazilian freshers week where all the universities get together for one huge street party which was rerally amazing. There were about 20,000 students in the street all of whom were pretty drunk. You could tell exactly who the freshers were as they were absolutely battered and covered in paint. Although there was so many drunk people there was no violence and I generally felt quite safe, despite the serious lack of police presence.
