On the way to the next place we dropped into the Waitomo caves for some caving. The caves were very large and also had glow worms but as it was black dark so the viewing was much cooler. That night we stayed in Rotorua which stank of sulpher due to the massive amount ofGeothermal activity. Was cool seeing the bubbling mud and steam coming from the ground.
Next place was Lake Taupo. On the way we stopped at the sky dive drop zone, i was planning to jump there but maybe due to the previous night alcohol intake or the journey there i wasn't feeling to good. I decided not to jump and stay in town to do it the next day. That night we went to a very interesting club in the town that cheap alcohol and poles on the tables proved to be a fun combination. When i got up the next day i was pissed off because the weather had deteriorated. I was put on standby and kept checking in but it didn't improve so i decided i should just move on as the town was fairly boring and i got bored i trying to get a whole in one at some golf thing on the lake. The next day i left for Tongariro National Park.
We stopped in at a ski resort but i didn't really feel in the mood as i decided to go skiing on the south island so opted out. I had a much more warmer experience drinking tea inside. Once warmed up we went to see some rivers and stuff. Now we were in Lord of the rings country now so we got to go to Gollum's falls etc. That night we had a big roast dinner round a log fire. The outside jacuzzi was not quite hot enough to chill in so we stayed in and watched a film. The next morning was an early start as i was going on a famous walk called the Tongariro crossing. It was not a hard walk and we got high up into the snow and ice. We walked by the mountain used for Mt Doom. At the peak there was no snow as there was geothermal activity, was weird feeling the ground warm when all around you was snow and ice. We had lunch sat in the middle of a crater. Was a really cool walk and allot more pleasant than the climb up that mountain in Ecuador.
The last place to visit on the north island was Wellington. When we got into town the bus took us up to visit a Lord of the rings filming site. As soon as i seen it i recognized it. In the first film when the 4 wee guys hide under a tree stump and the big bady stands above them. Wellington had a really cool feel to it. I spent a few days there. Went to there museum, which was far by the best museum I've been to. I took the cable car up the hill to the park and observatory. Seen my first Welsh bar. I've seen many Irish ones but this was my first Welsh one, didn't got for a drink tho.
I booked a ferry across to south island and said goodbye to the friends i had mad who chose to stay and work in Wellington.
