9th Oct I'm heading up to Vermont to see my dear friend Jill and her daughter Jemma. I take a relaxing Amtrak train out of NY and quickly slide into Autumn coloured trees and long fresh water lakes that continue, respectively, to reach redder and longer states until we steam our subliminal way into the Adirondack Mountains upstate New York. Jumping off the train at Westport, I'm immediately greeted by Jill, her dog and a dramatically different America. We do lunch at a strange fire department themed pizza joint on the edge of the still lake. Once over we drift down to the shore to take a tour onboard a newly built schooner ( a type used until the 60's to transport most goods in these parts) before ferrying across a flat and chilly Lake Champlaine to Vermont. If New York is the big apple, Vermont is the small cheese. Every house has the same architect and paint store while the neighbours are few and far apart. They are brilliant neighbours though; cars remain unlocked and when you go out - no need to bolt the doors. Unthinkable at first and odd knowing anyone can walk in while lying asleep. Blissfully asleep at that, I haven't slept this peaceful for a long time. So quiet, no cars, so much fresh Autumnal country air. Also, slightly disconcerting, are the various flying insects and ground species - like eh spiders, everywhere and there was a bright green cricket on my pillow last night. It's a little warm haven for those chaps compared to the bitter outside darkness.
