After the madness of China, arriving in a place that plays bird tweets out their speakers on train platforms and where cab drivers wear white gloves was pretty dreamy. My first hostel in Japan had a traditional set-up with a thin mattress on a layer of tatami. To match the rest of the country I had a pretty peaceful one for my first night in Japan.
The next day I headed over to the museum of Osaka's history and walked around their castle which everyone advises not to pay to go inside as the view from the outside looking in is a lot better than the reverse... I soon got on the sushi/sake combination with a few other travellers I'd met in a bar around the corner to the hostel. There was a Spanish couple that joined later who kept offering me a job at a call centre in Bangkok, though they were a good laugh I regretfully declined... The barman also slipped us a taste of what he reckons is the best whiskey in Japan, Yamazaki. Pretty powerful recipe!
