I'd pulled into Kyoto quite late, and my Taiwanese couchsurf host was out and about with a couple other couchsurfers, two solo French travellers. I didn't spill that I found it funny the Taiwanese guy showing the French lads around was called Frog. Went over to Fushimi Inari Taishi the next day and climbed Mount Inari. Got some quality street food on the way down called Takoyaki. Got chatting to a local and went for a couple pints with him. He was keen to find out if a Takoyaki stool would take off in London. I said with confidence that he'd make a killing, though I've since been told there are a fair few stools about!
I went to a bar after and met a Chinese girl who was having a break from her engineering role in China. I got some warm sake in and she introduced me to Okonomiyaki, this wicked little dish they make in front of you. Being the old capital, there's so much to do in Kyoto. I packed in a load of sites like Arashiyama and the Kinkakuji temple (gold pavillion) before shooting off to Nara on a bullet train.
