Mum & Renee woke at 6.30am as they planned to do the Boolimba Bluff walk (6.4km) - unfortunately Eamon picked up a calf injury during the walk yesterday and dad was also pretty fatigued, so they stayed back at the campsite.
The girls departed at 7.30am and followed the main track in for about 1km, then turned off onto the Bluff track. The Bluff towers 200m above Carnarvon Creek. The actual track is a Class 4 and involves steps, a few steep sections, and a particularly challenging 300m of constant steps and a number of ladders. We actually had to stop every 25 steps or so - it was pretty humid and not a breath of air so we certainly worked up a sweat (Mum did anyway!). It was great when we got to the top, and a quick 740m flat path took us to the Bluff, after only 1 hour of walking. The effort was worth it, with a spectacular view of the gorge from left to right - we spent 20 minutes wandering around taking photos, and then made our way back down and finished around 9.40 and arrived back to Dad & Eamon at 10am - a lot earlier than expected.
After a yummy brunch of pancakes, we basically sat around and did nothing at all because it was really, really hot. Mum checked out the platypus pool with no luck and we got a bit of washing out in the sunshine. Eventually around 4pm we went down to the Rockpool and had a great swim for about an hour - it was great. When we got back we spent about an hour at the Platypus Pool waiting for the elusive platypus - we lucked out, but did see some very pretty birds, a sea snake and a water rat.
Around sunset we ventured up to the lookout, but along the way there was a cute echidna looking for ants (hopefully not ours) - there are a crazy number of 'echidna' holes all over the place.
We found a cicada shell on the washing line today, but even better Eamon found a live one this evening!
