Well, not such a good day today - lots of things went wrong, starting with Dad's mobile number being suddenly disconnected. We packed up as normal, checked out, got petrol in Exmouth, a few things for lunch, and visited Whaler's again for nice coffees and fresh orange juices. We were on the road to Coral Bay around 11.30am - it was only 150km so we weren't in any hurry.
About 80km down the road, we all noticed a shocking smell coming from the car, so we pulled over. The replacement CV driveshaft had failed, with grease all over the undercarriage of the car, and the inner boot detached from the shaft. So we did a u-turn, and headed back to Exmouth, unhooked at the visitor's centre and Dad took the car back to the repairer around 3pm. Dad returned with a courtesy car (a daggy laser) and we waited for a call from the repairer to tell us if we needed to stay another night, or if he had parts to fix the failed component. Mum got a call from the guy and he wouldn't divulge any verdict, but asked Dad to come to the workshop, which we thought was odd. No wonder - he had driven the car with the bikes on the roof through a low clearance, broke the roof rack, and dented the car roof!!!
So he patched up the roof rack with a couple of coach screws, and gave us his CGU insurance details. Now we have to get the CV driveshaft assessed in Perth by the supplier, and also get the car assessed by CGU as well as buy a new roof rack! We were finally on the road to Coral Bay at 4.30 but it was getting towards dusk, and there were sheep and goats wandering on the road quite a bit, and the odd wallaby, so we didn't get to the Bayview Caravan Park until after 6.30. It was the most jam-packed park we'd seen with families everywhere. And the spot we'd been allocated was in the midst of it all - with cars opposite and beside and the owners nowhere to be seen, so we couldn't possibly get the van into the spot. Thankfully, reception was still open, and there were 3 other options, so we quickly moved elsewhere and setup in the dark.
Lucky we had some spaghetti bolognese in the freezer, because we certainly didn't feel like cooking up a meal after today's events!
