After some takeaway morning tea from Waves at Port Campbell, we continued our way down the Great Ocean Road. We arrived at the beautiful Johanna Beach Campground within the Otway National Park and found our camping area - it was large and grassy and protected from the wind, and only a short walk to the drop toilets. It was a sunny day, and as rain was forecast to come, we made the most of it and went to Apollo Bay for some surfing - the water was pretty brisk, but Renee & Eamon had their spring suits on and didn't seem to mind - the waves were a bit messy so it was a challenging afternoon to catch the perfect wave.
On the way back home, we went to the Cape Otway Lighthouse - it had already closed for tours, but we were able to go up to the lookout and see it from a distance, which was fine (we have seen our share of lighthouses as Eamon reminded Mum & Dad). The bonus of this little detour was the large population of koalas in the area - so cute we had to stop a few times to admire them, especially the mum with her baby clinging to her back! This area has lots of Manna Gum Trees, a favourite of the koalas, and for some reason they are dying. The experts are investigating, but they feel it's a combination of fire not having gone through the area in a long time, plus the undergrowth maybe sapping the trees of nutrients, plus the koalas actually eating the leaves. It's an amazing site - literally hundreds of trees just completely bare of leaves.
We arrived home to find a few new neighbours had joined us, and had great fun playing cricket in our great grassy area. Dad noticed a beautiful sunset, so Renee, Eamon & Mum ran up to the beach lookout and watched with lots of others as the sun set and made a beaut red sky over the ocean.
