Nervous Turkey!
The first full day in any new place can be tricky as you need to figure a few things out. Such as: Are we staying in the correct part of the island or are we missing out? What is the best/cheapest way to get around the place? Where can we afford to eat? Is there plenty of stuff to do here to occupy us? What is the beach like?
But today we had to figure out something new, something we had never done before. What is actually illegal? This has never occurred to us in Asia before but the normal 'it doesn't matter vibe' or 'the police just want a dollar thing' is not part of traveling Malaysia. We are referring to driving cars/motorbikes. As there is no public transport on the island we have the option of an expensive taxi or drive without the correct license. It has never been an issue before but now we are in a country where there are signs everywhere saying 'This offence will get you lashes and a long sentence', 'That offence will get you the cane and a long sentence'. The crimes in question can be anything from eating durian on the train, eating or drinking in the train station, littering, stealing, possession, molesting and drug smuggling (which is granted instant death sentence). Obviously we won't be committing the serious ones but it is not worth risking even getting stopped by the police in this place.
The humid day ended with us booking an island hopping trip for tomorrow. We booked it with the company that had a guitar so Matt could play for ten minutes while Char booked.
