Well, today I left the Mopan River Resort in Benque Viejo and headed to Placencia on a peninsula on the Caribbean.
To get to Placencia, I hired a driver to take me via the Western Highway, the Hummingbird Highway and then down the Southern Highway. The Hummingbird highway took us through the mountains though they are more like hills by our standards. Apparently the hummingbird highway name has nothing to do with there being lots of hummingbirds but more because the road twists and turns like a hummingbird's flight. I've certainly been on twistier roads. And I did see a hummingbird when we stopped at the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole is a place where an underground river surfaces for a couple hundred feet in the jungle. It is quite a nice spot where I did wade into the water. And there were fish that periodically jumped out of the river.
Along the drive today, there were quite a large number of orange groves. They grow valencia oranges and they are ripe now for picking. We saw quite a few trucks full of oranges headed to one of the 2 factories that process them for juice. We also passed a large commercial banana plantation.
The scenery along the way was beautiful so I'm glad I took this way to get to Placencia.
The Miramar apartments where I'm staying is quite nice. I'm in a second floor apartment suite with lots of room, 2 balconies. The one I'm on now while I type faces east and I can see the Caribbean. I'm hoping I'll get a nice sunrise at least one day that I'm here. It's a short walk to the beach although I walk on sand to get there anyway. The apartment is also right on Placencia Sidewalk, apparently once known as the narrowest street in the world at about 2 feet across. More on Placencia in future blogs.
As you can tell, another eventful day in Belize for me! And I still have a few more to go.
