hello again!
Sorry for our delay in writing, Zomba has been without internet! We have had a good week...last weekend we went to Liwonde National Park. We had a bit of a result as the dodgy dutchmen (stop spying...that definately makes you dodgy!!) managed to hire a luxury minibus from their work for the weekend. Seeing as they gave us a lift we thought we should let them come with us! Normally the minibuses have about 24 million zillion people crammed in, sometimes without windows....however, we had air con, electric curtains, swivel chairs and only 5 in the space for 24 million zillion. Excellent work...we knew there was a reason we made friends with the dutch. haha.
We arrived ridiculously early after getting up at 6:30 & were shown to our dormitory up some vertical steps which were actually narrow planks of wood with MASSIVE gaps in between...not good after a few Malawian Gin and Tonics (not that we drunk any, just hypothetically obviously). We headed for a boat ride with Captain Jones as he insisted on being called up the main river that runs through the national park. He said he would do anything to make us happy?!?!?!?! Maybe different uses of language again haha. Sounds lovely, although the ride there was a bit of an adventure...wish we had stolen diazepam from the pharmacy for Laura hehe. Captain Jones didnt dissappoint we saw hippos, elephants in the water, lots of birds (grandad) and enjoyed relaxing on the boat. After a good lunch that wasnt rice and beans (wooooooooooo) we spent the afternoon in the safari lodge drinking some 'greens' and headed up to the lookout to watch the sunset. It was amazing...you could see for miles. However we were a bit unsure about how safe we were in the makeshift treehouse we had trusted our life in 100 foot from the ground with monkeys above us and warthogs below us. After our roast dinner with fried vegetables soaked in oil (mmmm....we miss your roasts mummys) we went on a night drive with Michael Schumacher and nearly got decapitated by oncoming tree branches that we couldnt seein the dark. We nearly fell off (a lot) but it was soooo funny and were rewarded by seeing hyena, warthogs, hippos on land (rare we are told), elephants and other animals. When we got back we heard the other truck had broken down muahahahaha. Our plans for a big night with gin and tonic (although sprite for emily) were thwarted by the wierd lodge host who pulled the cushions from underneath us at about 10 and ordered us to go to bed. Oh well. We tried. We thought this might mean a peaceful nights sleep so werent too annoyed....except that one of the other students we went with decided to have night terrors and woke us up screaming and flailing his arms around. When we woke up we discovered we werent the only ones in the room however and saw half of our loaf of bread and chocolate had been knawed by something that looked suspiciously like rats teeth. They pooed on our table as well. grrrr rage. We did a morning safari and spent the rest of the day relaxing (Ian read Lauras Peter Andre book from cover to cover, complete with quotes...hilarious!) and then headed back to the nursing school in our luxury minibus.
We have spent the week at the hospital and finally met the elusive Dr Stephany. He has taught us a lot and we got the chance to practice more lumbar punctures, cannuals and catheters (eww). Next week we are going to Obs & Gynae, hopefully to deliver some babies! We are off to a tea plantation this weekend so will write again next week...that is, if we come back in one piece after becoming one of the million zillion minibus occupants. Wish us luck!
Hope everyone is well
