A short flight from Ushuaia, in a very dodgy plane found us landing in El Calafate. Instead of heading into town, we headed towards the small town if El Chalten, which is nestled in the shadow of Mt Fitz Roy. The drive is approx xkm which took about 3 hours with multiple photo stops and a short break at La Leona hotel/cafe. The weather was perfect, clear skies and a light breeze so we got awesome panoramic pics of lake Viedma? and the surrounding ranges. The lakes are an amazing azure blue which is caused by a layer of mineral sediment that sits on the surface.
El Chalten is known for being extremely windy because of the tunnelling effect of the surrounding ranges. We barely had a puff of wind on arrival. Seems the weather gods were smiling on us.
After checking in, we had our briefing for the next day and then all went out to dinner before turning in early for our big hike the next day.
