Our first stop after Buenos Aires was Uruguay´s Montevideo. We took a 1 hour boat trip over to Colonia in Uruguay and then a 2.5 hour bus ride down to Montevideo. The trip wasn´t too bad all in all. Caught up on a bit of reading and sleep!
The first thing we noticed in Montevideo was the smell. At first we thought it was just the taxi we jumped in (yeah we got another taxi), but sadly as the taxi drove off, the the horrid smell of urine and sewage remained. I know what you´re thinking but Aaron showered that morning so I really couldn´t blame him on this occasion. Fortunately, it didn´t smell in the hostel and when we wandered around the town it wasn´t so pungent in other areas.
We shared a dorm room with 4 Brazilian guys who made us feel really old when they left the hostel, to hit the town at 11.30pm, as we crawled into bed!!! D´oh, I´m afraid we´re losing our touch. Worse still... they got in at 5am and then got up at 7am and checked out. Hard core or what? I felt so lame as I got my still tired ass out of bed at 8am.
We spent our first full day wandering around the town, starting with a morning walk along the promenade. Yup, we were the only people out walking in the bright but chilly morning... well us and the OAPs who we found jogging down the promenade. Fuelling the undeniable fact that we are losing it. Walking with OAPs instead of partying...what´s going on? This is something that we will be addressing!
Since there wasn´t all that much happening in Montevideo we booked a morning bus back to Colonia which we´ve been told is very pretty.
