Day 7.
Up early for a 1 hour drive to Suva, the capital of Fiji. On the way in there were a few military check points and I thought, is this such a good idea? There was little evidence of the current military coup elsewhere, but there was here. However, the police said we’d be fine the previous night.
In Suva there didn’t look to be much to do. We went for a stroll in the University of South Pacific looking for free internet access but no such luck. Next door was the National Stadium, so we enquired about rugby tickets - apparently we’d been told wrong as the big games were last weekend or next weekend. This weeks was in Sigatoka, where we’d traveled from 2 days before.
Back at the hotel we’d read not to venture into Suva after dark but we got really bored because everyone there were big fat Tongans (who don’t speak as much English) waiting on a US visa. So we took a little walk and found a tennis club and clubhouse 1 minute down the road. We got chatting to the barman and he said we could go to a bar in town if we stuck to the main road. Usually Fijians are fairly gung ho, so we took his slight warning to mean definitely don’t go.
In true Brevet Club style a local Fijian piss head came and sat at our table. He insisted its easier for us to call him by his ancestors name, Ian Robinson J After talking a load of amusing rubbish he offered to take us for a drive to the mountains and north Fiji the next day if we paid his petrol. The barman said that he has a massive 4x4, owns a construction business and when he is sober he is a really decent bloke, so it seemed like a decent deal.
When the bar shut we headed back, another strange night.
