Day 6 - Pacific Harbour
Another 1 ½ local bus ride to the next town. Pacific Harbour is a model town consisting of nice houses and well kept lawns unlike the other shanty towns we’ve been to. However, these buildings are mostly empty because the expected boom didn’t materialise and the property developers have to keep them well maintained on the off chance a rich foreigner decides to buy one.
The main attraction here is the Arts Village. Its very like the Disney Village in Orlando (shops and restaurants set around a big lake). The only accommodation, apart from expensive resorts, was a luxury hostel set right in the Village. It was a little more expensive than we were used to, but it had air con, TV, air hockey and a themed pool with slide and poolside cocktail bar!
Apart from milling around the shops with the American tourists, there wasn’t much else to do except chill out, so we just swam and got a crate of beer for the evening. This was until a barman got hold of some kava for everyone in the hostel. The only problem was that he couldn’t find the special bowl to drink it from, so as the police station always has one on the go, he suggested we take a walk there. Obviously me and Duncan were well up for that because it something pretty cool we can say we’ve done.
The police were drinking outside on some big picnic benches and were really happy to see tourists. The policeman I’m pictured with came to England to join the army but was over the weight restriction, so he played for Cheltenham rugby team instead and we were chatting away about that. Although it turns out that drinking big bottles of beer in public is illegal, the cops were fine with me and Duncan cracking on with ours in between Kava bowls. Kava is like super strength tea/a weak form of liquid marijuana which chills you out and makes you sleepy, and these cops were still on duty.
After a couple of hours we went back and drunk the rest of the beers until early hours with some of the others in the hostel and crashed out. All in all, a pretty weird night.
