Had a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs with ham on muffins with mushrooms and tomato. Best breakfast since I've been away.
We needed a good breakfast because Mel and Paul took us up to a place called Binna Burra in Hinterland. Unfortunately, the weather is really poor today. They're probably more disappointed than we are about it because they had loads of different ideas to take us here there and everywhere...in the sun! Bloody rain! But we were up for some adventure in the rain.
We drove out to Hinterland. Got to one of the roads to the National Park but it had been closed off due to the recent bad weather. So we had to take another route up there. The fog was pretty bad and the rain was torrential. Mel and Paul can't believe how bad the weather is. They said that at this time of year it's usually beautiful, hot and sunny.
We made it up to the National Park. Stuck on our ponchos, rain jackets and umbrellas, and set off on a mini hike. It was like being in a jungle. Although it was really raining, it was really fitting. We could hear waterfalls, birds and other animals were making lots of noise, it was quite waterlogged and we could see the misty/foggy valley through the trees, so it was really like a jungle!
It's weird to walk around in torrential rain in only shorts and t-shirt with a waterproof jacket on and still be really warm.
We walked for quite a while through these caves/coves in the side of the hills, all on a walking path mind. Mel was saying that there was water running down areas that she'd never seen before. Well, there was water running down everywhere at the side of the hill. We loved it. We don't mind walking in the rain just as long as we don't get freezing cold!
Mel and Paul were really disappointed for us because of the weather, but actually we couldn't imagine it different to that. The rain seemed to be more fitting than for it to be really sunny. As I said, felt more like a jungle. And it seems to come alive more when it's raining...literally...with leeches! Yep, we were attacked by leeches! And Therese had the first one attached to her ankle! Haha! Paul pulled the little thing off and Therese was left with some blood on her ankle. Took a bit of yanking to get it off though. Then we kept finding them on our shoes. Then I got one on my ankle - burnt the little damn thing off with a lighter. Must have been Ray Mears that showed me that one. We weren't walking through rivers, but the path was a bit boggy in parts from the rain. It was an experience anyway!
We get to the end of the track and had a leech check. Took our trainers off and had to take a few leeches off the trainers - they were even sinking their teeth into them. Got a couple with the lighter though. It absolutely poured it down then too a we only had a short walk down the road to the car though and caught a glimpse of Egg Rock through the mist in the valley.
Mel cooked us a lovely meal for tea - chicken stuffed with cheese and red pepper with roasted vegetables, and boiled green beans. Delicious. And so good after all the pretty poor meals we've had recently.
Really enjoying ourselves even if it isn't sunny. Just hope this bad weather holds off otherwise it's going to really mess up our trip to the north of the east coast.
