October 31st, 2010 --- Great Barrier Reef (Live aboard Day 2)
Today was our last day out on the reef in Cairns. We awoke at a lovely time of 5:30am to be in our bathers and wetsuits by 5:40am and jumping into the water for a morning snorkel. The fish were quite active this early in the morning. We were able to experience different animal behaviour than our snorkels that we completed yesterday. We cruised around for the majority of the morning, jumping in for a snorkel 3 more times before lunch. After lunch, we met our tender boat, said our goodbyes to the live aboard boat and staff, and made our way back to Cairns. The Cairns Dive Center put on a party at the Woolshed for anyone onboard who was interested in continuing the party... free beer and pizza... who wouldn't go?When we arrived back on solid ground we took our underwater camera back and then caught a ride from the CDC team to our hostel for the night (Serpants Nomads). We checked into our 4-bed dorm, went for a quick dip in the lovely pool (as if we hadn't had enough swimming!) and then showered... the luxury of freshwater! We had a free BBQ or "sausage sizzle" as the Aussies would say at our hostel.Cairns is all about the free stuff and I love it!We arrived at the Woolshed around 8:30pm and met up with our dive team, but only after Allie made a grand entrance as she tripped down the stairs into the bar making a lovely noise attracting all the heads in the lounge bar!Hilarious!Even the bartender gave her a hard time when we tried to order drinks! We called it a night around 2:30am, quite an accomplishment considering we were up at 5:30am this morning!
Not your typical Halloween night! It was weird not having a costume and all the hype that's associated with Halloween in North America.A few people were in costumes, but Halloween is generally not celebrated by Aussies.I'll just have to make up for it next year with an extra stellar costume!
