It's been a while since I updated this, so now I have 2 weeks worth of stuff to tell you about. Starting 2 weeks ago, I think I said I was planning a chilled weekend by the pool. Well, of course that never happened! Instead I went on an elephant ride safari. It was supposed to happen on Saturday, and so I got up at 5:30 a.m. in order to be picked up at 6 (!!!!). After waiting for my bus for an hour it became clear that they were not comming to pick me. So I had to rearrange to do it Sunday, leaving me a whole day free that I wasn't expecting to have. I used it to sleep, go to the markets and the tailor. I've only been here 4 weeks and I'm already sick of all my clothes! But you can buy wonderful fabric here and I had a skirt and a bag made to jazz up my wardrobe.
On Sunday I was up again at stupid O'clock in the morning, except this time I was picked up, and it was definitely worth it! I rode the biggest elephant called Bob. He didn't like to go past the raised platform like the other elephants for people to get on him, so he knelt down and then I was basically thrown up onto his back! I saw giraffes and gazelle, lots of baboons, but no wild elephants. The best bit though was the 3 month old baby elephant. It was the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life! It acted like a naughty little child and kept trotting off to get into mischief. They took the elephants through the water and it had to swim erally hard to keep up with us. After the ride we got to feed the elephants and then we got fed a full english breakfast. So good after eating only cornflakes for breakfast for a month!
The week that followed was pretty good. The kids are still trying to be as awkward as possible when I teach them, but there are some really sweet ones in the class too. My afternoon activity was HIV education. I really enjoyed this as you go round the community and recruit people for a 4 day workshop, and then you plan your own sessions to do with them. I've done 2 days and I have another 2 to do. On Friday we had them all putting condoms on bananas! This week I'm going to do a night shift at the hospital aswell, so I may see a baby being born.
The weekend that's just gone was more relaxed but very drunken! On Saturday night we all went on the Sunset cruise, aka 'the booze cruise', which is an all you can drink cruise down the Zambezi. So you can imagine the state we were all in after 2 hours on that! Sunday was spent recovering. All 10 of us were crowded into the one bedroom with air conditioning to try and escape the heat. It is becoming unbearably hot now, especially at night. The rainy season starts at the end of the month, so the temperature will just build up until the rains come. Makes me so glad we have the pool!
So, that's about it for now. My next blog will probably be my last from Zambia. I can't believe I only have 2 weeks left. The time has gone so quickly!
