Well we managed to get a cheeky lie in while the other poor devils from some other tour group had to get up to hike up dune 45 at ridiculous o clock , oh how lovely the ground felt on my 1cm foam mat as they rumbled away in their truck!.
Not much later though everyone began to stir as we wanted to get away to beat the heat of the morning sun which would turn into the blazing afternoon sun. With everything packed away we all jumped onto the truck and set off into the sun rise. Our destination today was fish river canyon. Now fish river canyon is an awesome place (I like to write as if I have knowledge but unfortunately I have to go and revisit the hand written version so as to not make a fool of myself). Anyhow we were not passing much in the way of a convenience store that day and sowe were hanging out for something good at a little town we passed by so that we could get something in the form of a cake as it was out tour leadrers birthday that day and you have to have some sort of fuss made on your birthday. I had already bought balloond and candles way in advance but the cake I didnt quite have that one down!!!.
So we stopped at this small village after a pretty uneventful journey only a pee stop or two nothing major and my hopes were raised as I saw the word carrot cake, yey i thought however y hopes were dashed as the lady of the shop informed me that we had to call her the day before if we wanted a cake......... er uno problemo, we do not know where we are stopping from one day to the next let alone be on first name terms with the cake lady at a small village we happen to be passing through!!.
So with innovation being our middle names we grabbed a couple of kit kat chunkies... yes kit kat chunkies. I thought it was smart. However not so smart when the outside temperatures are reaching forty degrees......yes chocolate does melt however the eskie was our saving grace. So I threw these kit kats into the tardice that was our cool box. Honestly I think that if you should have accidentally fell in you may never get out.
That small issue sorted we got on our merry way again and soon we arrived at Hobas, our campsite for the night. I thought I saw some tumbleweed rolling down the road , we were the only people there, not that I am complaining or anything it was an alright campsite. It was ridiculously hot so we all ran and jumped into the pool after completing the usual routine of putting up the tents etc, come on readers even you should know the drill by now.
After that quick refreshment we hopped onto the truck and headed to the canyon, honestly anyone who saw it would be amazed by the sheer vastness of this vision before them. Fish river canyon is basically a massive gorge that has been carved out over time. You are actually able to do a five day hike down it but not during the wet season due to the risk of flash floods and sun stroke, flip I had better put my bivvy bag away, no hiking trips for me. So Billie dropped us at the top and we walked back, it was not too strenuous thank the lord as it was so flippin hot. We all completed the hike with no problems and after a short rest we headed back to camp to cook tea... in the daylight.
Yes there was certainly daylight but there was also a sandstorm, hands up has anybody tried to cook in a sandstorm??? Well I was only a bystander during the whole affair but I can tell you it is flippin awful, we went through a whole bottle of gas and the girls who were cooking looked like they had just undergone plastic surgery as they were wearing sunglasses to keep the sand from their eyes!
They did a grand job, luckily by the time it came to cleaning up the sand had stopped blowing, good job as I dont know how we would have coped with sand coated plates, it would have made interesting washing up and very gritty teeth. We all sang Martina a happy birthday and made her blow out her now melted candles on her now semi melted kit kat, mmmm attractive. We had also blown up some balloons and tied them around the place so although it was only a small gesture I think she liked it.
With that sone and with so much sand blowing around the place we all went to bed that is after we had dug our ways in there. With no fly sheet on the sand had blown into the mesh and filled the floor with lots and lots and lots of sand. Not sandcastle making material though it was too dry.
