Lush Life
Well, we've been on the road for exactly 2 weeks now, and we've had an amazing time! The trip started off hysterically. It was April 1st, and although I mentioned to Nads the night before that we probably shouldn't be heading off on April fools we laughed it off. We got up the next day though completely forgetting, and packed up all our stuff. I then went to get the car keys out of my bag, but couldn't find them, and crapped myself basically cos i thought i'd lost them after just 12 hours. Nads didn't have them so we had the flat upside down looking, then Trig ad Liv came back home and we asked them if they'd seen them and they said they hadn't and helped us look for them. We then decided to retrace our steps, and so went down to reception first to see if anyone had handed in any keys, but they hadn't, and so from there we went down to the garage to see if we'd dropped them. When the lift door opened though the keys were no where to be seen, but neither was the car. Nads went crazy, I was in shock and Liv started laughing. Nads nearly smacked her (so funny), but then they couldn't hold it in after realising that we had no clue, and screamed April Fools! They'd nicked the keys from my bag, gone down and moved the car to a different garage space, and then had us believe that we'd lost the keys and the car had been nicked. It was terrible at the time, but once we'd got over the shock of thinking our car had been stolen, we saw the funny side. Legends. They pulled it off a treat! Good start to the trip!
So, we headed off to the Blue Mountains first. It was great there, and we were camping in a national park with a drop toilet and that was it. We had to drive for about 15 minutes through the park to even get to the pitch, so it was all a bit secluded, which was nice, until the second night when we returned after a day of sightseeing to find just our tent and one other left on the field, except the people in that tent weren't there, and as they locked the gates to the national park at 6pm and it was about 5.55 we got a bit panicky that we'd have to spend the night in the middle of the pitch black mountains by ourselves! They did get there though, with literally a minute to spare, and we had a mad rush to make some food as it was getting dark dead quick. We managed to get some pasta and sauce done before it was pitch black. And as we don't have a torch (haha) it was just as well. It was freezing though, like proper cold, so we sat around a camp fire, and at one point we heard noises which sounded like people running towards us, so naturally we crapped it, but it was kangaroos. They went hopping right past us, it was great. I doubt if we'll experience that again. You could walk right up to them through the day too, when they were on the field grazing, it was well good. We went to see the three sisters (a famous rock formation) and went on walks and on mountain trains and cable cars, it was loads of fun, and so beautiful.
From there we went to the Hunter Valley, the wine region and did loads of free wine tasting tours. Again, the scenery was stunning, and we spent alot of time driving around to look at all the different vineyards. I did have a brief spell in hospital there though. I got food poisoning, and from the pain I fainted, knocking myself out. I landed on my face so I had a right shiner and cuts and grazes all around my eyes and on my cheekbones and forehead. I had to go to hospital for a day and then went back again the following day for tests, but after about a week the food poisoning cleared up and now I'm fine!
We then went to Port Macquarie, home of the koala's. We went on a bit of a koala hunt, but didn't come across any so went to the sanctuary instead, where we got to stroke one...so cute, and then as we got back to the campsite Nads spotted one up a tree. We were so excited, got loads of pics, and stood under the tree for what felt like hours waiting for it to come down, but as they sleep for about 23 hours of the day we gave up in the end. The campsite we were staying at was on the seafront, and had the mouth of a river running through it, and of an evening we walked down there and dolphins were in the water playing, it was fantastic.
From there we went to Coffs Harbour. We sunbathed there mainly, as it had a beautiful beach, and went fishing, with the fishing rod that we acquired with our car. We didn't know how to cast off so these lads that we were camping next to showed us, but we didn't catch anything. Think it had something to do with the fact that we were using bread and bananas as bait though!
Since last Tuesday we've been in Byron Bay, staying with a family that Nads knows. Its been great, we've had a proper bed, and a telly! Haha, no, thats not why its great! The house backs onto a gorgeous deserted beach that stretches for miles, so we've been going on beach walks and sunbathing alot. The weather further up the coast is amazing, we're loving it. We went to The Byron Bay Blues Festival aswell yesterday and the day before. It was so much fun, got to see David Gray, Jamie Cullum, Beth Orton, and some other peeps who I didn't know of, but who were really good.
Today we chilled out, after a 12 hour day at the concert yesterday, and then tomorrow we're going to visit the Byron lighthouse, and go on a walk on some other beach near there. We leave here on Monday for Brisbane, then we have a few weeks to get up the coast and across to Darwin ready to start work again! We've been told that Darwin is really really hot though and you can't go on the beaches, cos there are crocs in the shallow waters in the sea! Great! But the motel we're working at has a pool, so it's not all bad.
I'll get the photo's uploaded tomorrow for you to track my travels so far.
Hope you're all well. Love Lauz xxx
