I was so excited to head out to Cathedral Square today to see the famous Christchurch Cathedral. Was a bit disappointed because they were doing restoration works inside and outside so there were huge cranes and barricading everywhere. Nevertheless it is a beautiful building. Grabbed a guide from the visitor's centre and set out to explore. Walked past the Canterbury Club which is one of the oldest Gentleman's clubs in Christchurch. It even has a working gas lamp outside! Walked over the Bridge of REmembrance which was erected to remember those who died in WWII. I carried on walking alon ghte Avon River and cam eacross the Antigua Boatsheds which are the only ones left on the river and are where you can pay to go on a Gondola ride. Next was the Arts Centre which used to be the university - the building is so amazing. Must have been awesome to go to classes in such a historic building. I went into the Canterbury Museum across the road which had various exhibits. Like the Arctic one which had a base camp setup just as it would have been in Antarctica - all it needed was the snow! There was also a Victorian Lane with various old shops - a nurse figure 'spoke' to me as i walked past (obviously triggered by motion sensors) and I nearly jumped out of my skin! There was also a toy shop with the most amazing Doll's house inside - any girl's dream! Walked past Christ's College boys school into Cranmer Square and past the Cathedral Grammar School. In Victoria Square there was a statue of JAmes Cook. Along Oxford Terrace there was 'A Tribute to Firefighters'. Sculptures had been made out of stell from the actual World Trade Center building and I felt really sad whan I touched it. I was so detached from 9/11 but right at that moment with my fingers touching the cold steel it was all really real. There was a really pretty section of the Avon River lined with Poplar trees right next to it.
Walking back into Cathedral Square I sat and watched a busker do some tricks. He put on a really good show. I then started the long trek to the supermarket to get lunch and stock up for the next few days. Back at the hostel I pull all my stuff in the fridge and then headed out to the Cathedral Square to have a coffee and watch the world go by. There was a juggler playing iwth some kids and they were having great fun throwing balls at him. I came back to the hostel and had a shower, packed my bags and made dinner. Ended the evening by watching 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' with some German guys.
