Got on the interislander ferry shuttle at 7:15am which bypassed the train station and then dropped us at the ferry terminal. Checked my luggage right through to Christchurch and then got on the ferry. It is HUGE!! Has 10 decks with numerous restaurants, lounges, recliner seats and even two cinemas! Had a cup of coffee just as we were heading out and then found a nice cozy corner with a few vacant seats so I could lie down. WELL!! It was rough to say the least. I am not good with sea sickness as it is so the majority of the 3 hours was spent lying down trying to keep mymind off the nausea!! NOT FUN!
Got to Picton at 11:30am and sat around for a while and waited for my 1p, train to Christchurch. The train is called the tranzcoastal and it is really nice. Sat across from a Belgian couple so chatted to them for a bit. We travelled along the KAikoura coastline which is renowned for whales but unfortunately didn't see any. The mountain range was really beautiful with snow on the top. The train had an open viewing deck which was really nice but as the driver said, "Fully air-conditioned!" The journey was 5 and a half hours and by the time we got to Christchurch it was pitch dark. I caught a taxi because didn't want to be trapsing around at night not knowing where I was going. Better to be safe even though it was the most expensive 20minutes of my trip! Got to the hostel, had a shower and some dinner and then hit the sack!
