Pura Vida!
Ometepe Island - Nicaragua
The island was beautiful. The afternoon we got there i relaxed in the hammock outside my room and ended up falling asleep. None of us felt we wanted to do the optional excursion of an 8 hour volcano hike so the next day was really relaxed. We were staying out of reach of facilities but restaurant and everything was where we stayed. We were right on the edge of the lake and there was a beach but it was black sand. Again, i just read in the hammock most of the day. We left the island at 4am on Thursday morning!
Nicaragua - Coast Rica
The border crossing was a nightmare. All the others went so smoothly that i guess it was likely to happen. We got off the big coach on the Nicaraguan side and it took about half an hour but at the Costa side the power had gone off so we were in a huge non moving queue waiting to have our passports stamped but werent getting anywhere. Eventually after about 2 hours someone collected them and took them off to be stamped but then we all had to get everything from the coach to be searched which again took ages. back on the bus to San Jose and the weather suddenly turned which slowed us sown even more. So having got up at 4am we didnt get into San Jose until 7.30pm...everyone a little tired and fraught by this point! As some of the group were leaving us the following day we decided to celebrate Jon's birthday a little early. We set out string around the hotel and blind folded him. Everytime he felt a knot in the string he got a pressie! It was very funny watching and videoing him!
San Jose
On Friday we had a lovely day mooching around the craft market, shops and other local market. At Jon's request we all got Maccy D's for lunch, bit naughty! In the evening we were joined by the new group and said bye to a few people leaving. There are now 18 of us! Went for a great group dinner and the old group went out clubbing after dinner.
San Jose - La Fortuna
Only about a 4 hour journey today. Four of us got dropped off enroute to do white water rafting. We had a good few hours of amazing rafting. Some of the rapids were huge and i got checked out 3 times. Haha i was the first person out of everyone in 5 or 6 different rafts to fall out and it was so scary because we were in big rapids. Luckily i got stopped by a rock so could climb back on quickly! Adventurous stuff! After rafting we got included lunch and then dropped off at our hotel in town.
La Fortuna is a lovely little place. The town is set out in a square around a park in the middle and right at the foot of Volcano Arenal. Yesterday evening a couple of us met up with the rest of the group who had been walking and had take away pizza at a volcano viewing spot. Unfortunately there was cloud cover and it began to rain so we didn't get to see the lava. We then went to a resort place with lots of varying temperature hot springs. The water was natural and the higher the pool the hotter it got. Some even too hot to go in. We spent 3 hours lolling in the pools... great muscle soak after the rafting but i ache a lot today!
Slept in this morning until 10 but got rudely woken by the cleaner barging in! You have to seize any opportunity for a lie in on this trip! This afternoon Jon Andy Jemma and I took a taxi to a beautiful, peaceful waterfall. The water was cold but very refreshing. There are so many optional activities here that im having to really choose the things i want to do.
Costa Rica is the most developed of the Central American countries and almost half is a natural park so things are more expensive to compensate for that i guess. The landscape is very pretty - so lush and green.Â
