On saturday we crossed the border into Honduras and again i was amazed at how different the landscape and culture looked. We are with a new group now and there are lots of girlies. Andy, Jon and the trainee leader, Paul are the only lads in a group of ten! We got to Copan mid-afternoon and the first evening we all went on the back of pick up's on a bumpy track to natural hot springs. The drive there was about an hour and through some of the most pretty scenery i have seen in Central America so far. The people here in Honduras look very different. Many look european and the men have a distinct cow boy look, they all carry machettis, even in the town. We passed many houses on the way to the hot springs and the beauty of them was in how basic some of them were. We arrived before dark and got into the river. Hot water was flowing into it over a small water fall and one part was even too hot to stand in. Other parts were good bath temperature as the hot was mixed with some cooler water flowing down stream. As it was natural there was a bit of a sulphur stentch but apparently good for the skin so we all wallowed in the water for over an hour until our BBQ was ready. We headed back at about 9pm and the journey in the pick ups felt even bumpier as you couldn't see when the pot holes were coming!
Yesterday was an early start to visit the famous Mayan Copan ruins. Although i really felt i had seen enough, our guide was such a character that it was actually quite fun. It was a half day excursion and in the afternoon i caught up on some much needed sleep. Went to a lovely restaurant last night as it was one of the girls birthdays.
This morning was a 6am start to catch an bus to Tela. We arrived at about 3pm this afternoon after a very long, sweaty journey. Tela is a beach town right on the Carribbean sea. We stop here just for tonight before getting the ferry from La Ceiba over to the paradise island of Roatan where we have 3 days to veg out on the beach or for the more active - go snorkelling, diving, swimming with dolphins etc. Can't wait to be emerged in the slower pace of island life again before the hectic schedule continues.
I will be in touch after Roatan - everything including internet is apparently expensive on the island.
