El Primero Fin de Semana --- (The first weekend)
Where to begin… Last I wrote I took a tour of the Cathedral and Alcazar. Yesterday we went on a bus tour across Sevilla , and I can happily say, this is the place for me. It is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen before. Although it may not seem like paradise because of the location, the size, the language, and (of course) the rare, but normal chance that you may step in dog poop on the side of the road, I am constantly amazed by its culture and people.
I went out to eat for the first time yesterday. In the afternoon, I ate my first gyro, and I must say that it was DELICIOUS! Then, for dinner, I went to a local tapas that is two doors down from my house. It always seemed like a local “hot spot” so my curiosity got the best of me, and my roomate and I decided to go. Even though we were the only americans within a 2 mile radius, the people around us were absolutely wonderful. Interestingly enough, many of the resturaunts that we have come by all work the same. The owner is part chef, owner, and waiter. They all love to meet people and love to share their passion with new customers at the restaurant. As for the food, I ordered the shrimp con aceite (shrimp with olive oil). This shrimp was not only cooked to perfection, but also tasted like a little piece of heaven when you bit into it. They cook the shrimp in a mixture of olive oil, fresh garlic cloves, and a sort of fresh green seasoning from here. It literally melted in your mouth! As for my other course. I ordered pan de jamon (which is one of the many “panes” or bread that they are known for). This was a freshly baked loaf of bread cut in half, with a fresh cooked garlic spread along the top of it, and to top it all off… proscuitto was baked on the bread for the “crisp and salty” taste as Pepito said. Once again, I feel like my passion for food has expanded within A DAY of eating here! The funny thing is, that every time that a new course would come out, he would not only describe what it was, but also how the chefs prepare it. Like I said before, Spaniards live with the utmost passion throughout all that they do in life. If they don’t love it, then why do it?
On to the night life… I have quickly found out that this place is known for their late nights, and their great celebrations. In Spain, Sevillanos are known as the “late nighters.” They go out late and stay up even later. So is of no surprise that I will wake up at 5 in the morning to a parade of people walking down the streets. But don’t be fooled. It is people of ALL ages! People from Maddy’s age all the way to people older than Grandma Pauline. It is amazing! Not to mention, I have yet to see a night where kids don’t eat with older relatives or older friends in general. It is almost as if it is a necessity to take time out of your day to catch up with the ones you love, it’s awesome! I can honestly say that it just makes me more excited every day, thinking that I will soon be that person with my family sharing a late night meal in the plazas!
I love you guys and miss you all terribly! But, it is about that time now… SIESTA. Even though I haven’t found myself napping, it is a great time to see what the city is really like. Everyone is off of work, outside, and enjoying the beautiful weath er (65 degrees). Hasta Luego! (until later)
