Language barriers can be tough to deal with. Below are the only words that I know in Spanish thanks to my roommates (yes, plural) being Dora the Explorer for Halloween:
- Hola (Hello)
-Cervesa por favor (Beer please)
-Gracias (Thank you)
-Adios (Goodbye)
Luckily, these are the only phrases that I really need to communicate. So thanks Dora.
On a different note, it is a major bummer that we´re only staying Barcelona for one day because it is fantastic. Yesterday morning we left Sevilla and took the six hour train ride here. I wasn´t happy to leave such a gorgeous city, but our hostel room was so unbelievably hot all the time that I couldn´t wait to get out of there. Until last night I hadn´t slept in three days.
On the train yesterday they showed this movie with Richard Gere. It had been dubbed over, so it was in Spanish, but even without sound it was the saddest thing I have ever seen in my life. Both Anna and I were sitting on this train sobbing like babies. It was embarrassing. It was about a dog, Hachi, whose master had a heart attack and died while he was at work and the dog waited at the train station for him every day for nine years. And it´s a true story. Oh man, my eyes are welling up just thinking about it.
Anyway, we got to Barcelona at around two then waited in a line for about 45 minutes to buy our train tickets to Nice for tomorrow. We quickly dropped our stuff off at the hostel and went off to explore. I´m still bitter that the US lost, so we won´t relive that experience and move right on to today.
We easily negotiated the metro and went all over the city. Public transportation is a god send here. First we made our way to Park Guell. It´s like a Dr. Seuss world created by the spanish architect Gaudi. From there we went to the beach and found a cable car that takes you high above the port. The view was unreal. But we needed to climb an epic mountain to get there. And we were not sure if the stairs that we were climbing would actually lead us to where we wanted to go. In the end, though, it all worked out.
Both of us will be sad to leave España tomorrow, but we are excited for the rest of our trip and feel as though we have really gotten our bearings. After the eight hour train we have to take tomorrow, the next two days will be spent on the beach in the beautiful French Riveria. Woot woot.
