We just arrived in Venice after spending the last 6 days in Roma. There is so much history there it is completely mindblowing. The 'rents set us up in a nice fancy pants hotel and it was great to both see them and be able to spread out/have our own space.
Yesterday we took a day trip to Pompeii. It was one of the sites that I was looking forward to seeing the most. An ancient city so well preserved and frozen in time. We caught a train from Rome to Naples and then from Naples to Pompeii and were there within two hours. We met a really nice couple getting off the train who were also trying to figure out where the hell to go. So we split a cab to the ruins. The place was freaking huge. I don't know what I expected, i think I just thought the place was a tiny ancient village, but it was enormous. Romans were so sophisticated. The map was pretty unhelpful in telling us where we were and what we were looking at most of the time, so that was pretty frustrating, but just imagining what everything must have looked like 2000 years ago was sweet. Unfortunately, it was really hazy so it was hard to see the volcano and we didn't really have time to go explore that. Though i suppose that five hours in the sun wondering through ruins is enough for one day.
At around 4:45 we caught two trains back and were back in Rome in time to watch the Spain/Germany game. At the bar we had to deal with a swarm of obnoxious high schoolers from Canada. They were most likely on a school field trip trying to get wasted. It was annoying. Luckily their curfew was 10:30, so even though girls were mumbling, "it doesn't even matter...we're already grounded anyway..." they left relatively quickily. I'm still not over the fact that Germany lost, seeing as we get into Munich the day of the final... It was so close!
We really enjoyed everything there is to see in Rome, but we're happy to be moving on. It was weird to be in one place for such a long time. So this morning we got up early, ate our last free breakfast, and got on a train to Venice.
This city is absolutely stunning, you walk out of the train station and are immediately on the Grand Canal. Apparently it is impossible to not get lost here, so we're now we're going to wonder around and just let that happen then attempt to find our way back to the hostel.
Ciao!

Cynthia I've always wanted to see Pompeii, and too thought it was small . .. now I'll be more prepared if we ever get there.
