MARGS
I decided to stay in Margaret River for a couple of days, because there is a big surf competition going on! So for the past three days, I have been getting up and getting a ride down to the beach (not because I'm lazy, because it is about 9 km away!) and spending the day sitting down on a cliff watching the pros in the water! Yesterday there were some amazing waves, between 3 and 5 meters high!
I have met lots of the people staying here in the backpackers', lots of British and French. And since we are all cooped up together in this little building, we have no choice but to get along so the mood is great and we have been having lots of fun.
The town is a bit like Verbier, with a main street where all the shops and pubs and restaurants are, and then it is surrounded by beautiful coastline and bush. And instead of snow there is surf. I think everyone here surfs or has surfed at one point. Last night at the tavern, we saw lots of pretty famous surfers including Cory Lopez which I'm sure no one has heard of but I have and I was pretty stoked to see him in real!
The only thing is that you need a car to get to the breaks. And most of them are reef breaks which means you need to be a skilled surfer or willing to be wiped around on sharp rocks. I am neither, so I haven't been in the water. AND to add to that, on the day we got here they had to stop the competition for a while and get all the surfers out of the water because a shark was spotted!
But all in all, great beaches, great weather and the surf has been great to watch!!
