Quick update on our progress before we head into the mountains and the world of no internet!
Shanghai - its absolutely mental and full of people trying to sell you things and asking you to "looka looka!". Its really modern and full of lights, very different from the tranquil life of Xi'an. We walked along the Bund overlooking the Pudong River which was nice but very misty (yes it has followed us!) Spent a lot of time in Xintian di (more modern bar and restuarant area) both daytime eating lasagne or snails etc and night drinking far too much White Wine! Also went to the YuYuan Gardens and Bazaar which were very pretty but unfortunately I managed to lose half the group including Helen - bloody taxi drivers! Randomly we managed to spot them over a lake when we were on a bridge! V Random. Also saw the Acrobatics show which was more like a circus and had a man balancing a pot on his head (hilarious!) We also had gorgeous but expensive drinks on the 87th Floor of the Jinmao Tower! Very pretty lights but still quite misty! Oh also went to the Shanghai museum which was fun and Helen and I picked out several pieces we are shipping home!
Yangshuo - after a 27 and a half train journey (upon which we met a Chinese swedish student called Willy Wong - I kid you not!) We arrived In Yangshuo - very pretty but touristy town. We took a boat trip along the Li River which was very pretty but also apparently illegal as we got marooned on an island for an hour when the police turned up! Also had a full body massage for 40 Yuan which was very relaxing and good preparation for our biking and trekking to come! Been slightly frivolous and bought one of those huge bamboo farmer hats (I love it and yet have no idea what I'm going to do with it!!) and a very good fake Gucci clutch bag - they will be in the post soon mum!
We are off to a cooking class this afternoon to learn how to make Chinese Dumplings (we will go hungry tonight if they are awful as they are our tea!) We are then off to do a day bike ride through the rice fields and then a trek into the mountains to stay with a hillside tribe.
