Today we spent an hour online after breakfast, then headed out into St Kilda after finally making up our minds about what to do for the day! We stopped for a bagel at lunchtime and then got the tram towards town.
We got off at the King's Domain, a huge park area, for a look at the War Memorial. The building was huge and imposing, but inside was quite empty. In the centre of the hall was a plaque commemorating both wars, and around the edges of the room were books of remembrance containing the names of soldiers from Victoria who'd died in both wars - didn't manage to find the Bs or Ps though.
Downstairs in the crypt, we watched a film about Captain Parsons (!), an Australian solider who was captured along with his men and taken to a Japanese POW camp. The film told the story of the giant Union Jack flag he managed to smuggle in and keep secret from the Japanese as a symbol of solidarity while they were held there. His entire troop had signed the flag over the course of the war and Judy Garland even signed it, although we can't remember why or when!
It was a rainy day in Melbourne so we decided to head to the National Gallery next for a bit of culture, seeing as we couldn't go to the beach! We arrived just in time for the 2pm guided tour. The place was packed with famous and important treasures - we saw paintings by Rembrandt, Constable, Turner and Picasso amongst others. There was so much to see you could easily spent a couple of full days there - we'll have to go back next time!
Back at the hostel, it was time for the weekly bar crawl around some of the local pubs in St Kilda. Fist stop was Bar Zar where we got chatting to an Irish couple wh oare travelling around Oz. We moved onto the bar at Base Backpackers - live music there and a chat with a Canadian guy and Swedish guy about how expensive Australia is!
Our last stop was a bar called 29th Apartment where we carried on our conversation with the Irish couple. It ended up lasting until about 3:30am back at the hostel, so we must have had lots of important things to say - couldn't tell you what they were though!
