This blog will cover the first week we were in Cairns before we left to go to Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas. Unfortunatley there isn't really much to say! Since arriving we have realised that we now need to be much more careful with our spending, and there isn't really much to do in Cairns itself apart from sunbathe, shop and go out at night. Most of the activites are trips outside, which would be fine if we had more money! We arrived in the afternoon after the drive up from Mission Beach, which took much longer than it should have done due to us getting lost a bit on the way. We checked into our hostel straight away and then went for a walk around the block to get our bearings. All there seemed to be were cafes, restaurants and shops, and more restaurants and bars, but it was very nice all the same. The hostel we are staying in is called Gilligans and is one of the biggest here. It is very new and modern, and seems a bit more like a hotel than a hostel. That is until you meet all the bedbugs in the rooms and see how messy the kitchens are! There is a big bar and nightclub downstairs, as well as a nice pool and even a spa and gym. Not that I have payed a visit there at any point. As everyone else we were with had arrived about a week earlier, it was nice to catch up with everyone and see how they had been getting on. Also Fiona, who we had lived with in Sydney, had come up so it was good to see her too. We went out for pizza for dinner that night, and then just hung out in the TV room for a catch up.
I would have loved to sunbathe all day everyday by the pool, but the weather was a bit rubbish for the first few days we were in Cairns. It was hot and a bit muggy, but also very cloudy so not worth sitting by the pool. It was very disapointing to say the least, so we spent the first few days watching TV, going on the internet and doing a bit of shopping in the shopping centre. We went out on our second night in Cairns, and this turned out to be a very eventful night, so all was not lost. We went out in Gilligans bar first as they have cheap drinks at the weekend, and then went on to the Woolshed. This is a bar/nightclub which has a bit of a reputation here, but it was good fun. I ended up sleeping in the others room, and Justin ended up sleeping in the shower! We went to the cinema on the Tuesday to see a film called Sharkwater, which was a documentary about, you guessed it, sharks! It was good though and made me feel a bit better about going in the sea and not getting eaten.
Towards the end of the week the weather improved so we spent a few days by the pool working on our tan. Cairns does have a lagoon which is supposed to be very nice but it has been closed for renovations the whole time we are here for, so we had to stick to the hostel. The pool there is freezing, but it's nice after laying in the sun all day. The weather went from one extreme to another, because after being bad for so long, it became very, very hot instead! It was lovely! We spent most nights in the TV room to save some money as it would be so easy to go out everynight here and waste lots of it. Justin, Chris, Kelly and I went to the nightmarket one night, which they have all week, and had a walk around there and down by the Esplanade and Pier. On the Thursday of that week we went out again for Fionas last night because she was going home the next day. Kirsty, who we had lived with in Sydney too, had also come up for a week. It was another good night as there were so many of us out, and Fiona was the most drunk as it was her night, instead of spending all her time looking after Justin! We just went out for dinner at the local Irish pub the next night as we ad to be up early so we could check out and leave for the rainforest!
