After staying in Cape Tribulation for two nights, we continued our mini road trip of tropical Queensland by going to Port Douglas for three more nights. On the way there we stopped off in Daintree to go on a wildlife cruise of the Daintree River. It turned out to be really good and one of the best thing I have done in the last few weeks, that is when we finally arrived. The van decided to breakdown on the way there, which scared us for a bit as it was in the middle of nowhere. Luckily it started again eventually, but this was going to cause many more problems to come! Anyway, we arrived at the cruise place and hung around the gardens for a bit until it was time to go, and made the most of the free tea and coffee. The cruise was for an hour, and it was supposed to be a wildlife cruise, but the main focus was on spotting crocodiles in the wild. We were given binoculars so we could see close up and the man on the boat told us about all the other animals and plants that were there. Then we saw some crocodiles! We ended up seeing about 5, one of which was a huge male that would weigh about half a tonne, and a baby one too! It was loads of fun, and we were lucky because it was such a hot day and they were all sunbathing on the banks. Once the tour had finished we got a free pie and drink (which excited us a lot) and made our way down the coast to Port Douglas to check in to our hostel.
We didn't do much for the rest of that day after checking in. We had a walk around by the marina and water and up to the main street, and then chilled out in the hostel. We ate in the hostel bar that night and then had an early night as we were all so tired. The next day we hired some bikes from the hostel as it was free and went for a bike ride around the town. We went up to the lighthouse, and then to the lookout. This was up the steepest hill I have ever climbed up, and as it was such a hot day this probably wasn't the best of ideas in hindsight. It gave us some nice views of the town and the beach though. After that we biked down to Four Mile beach and stayed there for a couple of hours. The beach is really nice and pretty, but the sea wasn't great so we went back to the hostel to continue our sunbathing by the pool. The next day we were supposed to go out for the day, but Chris had taken the van in to a garage the day before to be checked out and it still wasn't ready. We waited and waited, but they kept saying that it would be ready in a couple of hours. In the end it had to stay over night again, and we didn't end up doing anything that day. I went for a walk back to the beach but the weather wasn't great so we just stayed in most of the time. It was a bit boring!
We got up early the next morning and made the most of the free breakfast before checking out. We had to hang around for a bit longer for the van, and then we were free to go. Port Douglas was really nice, but we were glad to go as we were worried we would have been stuck there another day. We drove back up the coast slightly to Mossman, to visit the gorge. It is quite a famous sight I think as it was very busy there. It is in the middle of the rainforest and very pretty. We walked up the track to the lookout and then to the ropebridge across the gorge itself, before going on the 2.5km walk through the trees. It was nice but a bit of a workout as it was such a muggy day. We stopped at another creek for a paddle and then contiuned the walk until we got back to the gorge itself. It was a really good day though and we all enjoyed it. The rainforest was amazing and good to see and there were some massive trees there which were very old, (even more than you Gran if you are reading this!) We stopped at the gorge on the way back to cool down. The boys went in and loved having a swim about, but it was way too cold for me so I just sat on some rocks and had a paddle about. After that we headed off back to Cairns for one more week there. We had to make a detour back to Port Douglas again as the van started making weird noises, but it turned out ok and we were off. It had been a great few days though and we had really enjoyed oursleves.
