Hello from Bangkok!
Since I last wrote we have clocked a good few miles, moving north from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and now we are in Bangkok, Thailand. I was quite sad to say goodbye to Cambodia, it was hard to beleive how quick our time there went, but the thoughts of Thailand and what we have ahead is all very exciting!
Visiting the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh opened our eyes up to how awful the suffering actually was under the Khmer Rouge regime. Out of a population of 7 milion more than 2 million people died due to the Khmer Rogue policies. The most shocking fact was that this all happened less than 40 years ago.
We left Phnom Penh for Siem Reap on a coach, which was an experience! There was chickens, motorbikes, roosters....all pilled on along with us! Siem Reap is famous for its temples at Angkor wat, which are amazing! We spent a whole day wondering around the temples staying for sunset at the main Angkor wat temple. It was so beautiful and apparently it wasn't even that great of a sunset, but still all the reflections of the surronding river and through the architecture of the angkor wat temple really was very beautiful. We sat by the river side for a while watching the final part of the sunset, i don't think I have ever been so chilled out in all of my life!
The next morning, we had a little drama at are hostel (guesthouse 10)! We had noticed the night before how our sink was quite loose from the wall and the next morning when Rach was brushing her teeth, and lent over the sink, there was a huge BANG, the whole sink had fallen off the wall and broke into a millon pieces!! The hosel owner was not impressed and even despite us telling him that we didn't pull the sink off the wall, as he was saying thats what we had, he wasn't having any of it! We faught our corner for a good while longer but then he told us we had to pay half otherwise he would call the police, this we most likely an empty threat, but after the stories you hear about police out here we coward in and just paid!!! Though we did move to a different hostel staraight away, there we were in protest leaving his hostel with our HEAVY backpacks in the mid-day heat....it was not fun!!! We move to guesthouse no 9 were we knew some of the guys we had met previously were staying, it was actually much nicer so it all worked out well and we were never to return to guesthouse 10 again!!!
We are now in Bangkok and did a spot of shopping yesterday. There really are some good bargains to be found here, i just wish i had the room to carry it all around! We are moving south this evening on the sleeper train to the thai islands. The Half moon party is on the 18th, so we want to be there in time to be settled and ready for a good old party!!!
Well i really must dash, i need to pack all my stuff up and check out of our hostel! I really hope you are all well miss you lots.
Lots of love,
Lauraine xxxxxx
