What a day!
I have had such a fantastic day!
First of all Ben (that I ment at the airport yesterday) had a day trip out in southern Mumbai. We paid about £20 for a day out with a guide! He took us to and showed us to sooo many places. I have see the city of Mumbai today!
The drive from our place to the south of Mumbai was about an hour drive mainly due to traffic! Indian drivers are crazy!!! We were first taken to Haji Ail, a mosque and tomb located on an islet of the coast of Worli. Haji Ali is on of the most recognisable landmarks of Mumbai.
We drove down Marine Drive which is a natural bay, 4.3km long where Chaupati Beach is. Chaupati Beach is famous for Genesh Chaturthi celebrations.
When we finally got to the Gateway of India, a Buddhist approached up, where he blessed us and told is that we are now able to marry. A bracelet was wrapped around out wrist and an Indian dot on our foreheads. While we were there, a muslim woman came up to us and handed me her baby and said she wanted a photo with us! Random! But then Ben explained that in Asia the locals will try and have there picture taken with you because of your skin and British features!
For lunch we went to a little restaurant not too far away from the Gateway of India. I wasn't looking forward to Indian food as I ain't a big fan of curry and spicy food. I was going to op for an omelette but then I decided to take a chance and chose something random off the menu. It turned out to be a curry, not too spicy and I actually really enjoyed it! The meal for two of us costed about £7 that was for two curries and rice, nan bread and cheap. I can't believe how cheap it is out here!
After lunch we took at walk around the area, some how we ended up in a slum area. The smells were so bad! Urine, animals! The locals actually had cows and goats as pets! I cant believe to poverty out here. Everyday I see it and I can't get over how bad it is. It is properly the worst iv seen.
Walking back to meet our drive, a little girl approached us, she had flower bracelets which she was 'selling'. She wrapped one around my wrist and said she wanted food rather then money, which I preferred. So we walked to a shop for rice and milk. On the way there we got talking to her, she was called Maria and was ten years old (she looked older tho), she told us she has 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
On the way back to the hotel, the driver too us to sir Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens and Kamla Nehro Park.
When were got back to the hotel, we met to people from Portugal, a girl Nury and a guy Miguel. They has just got there but were trying to get a train to Varnasi before moving onto Nepal.
Ben had to leave has he had to get a bus to Goa! So I told Nury and Miguel I'd show them the 'sights' on the area we were staying. As we were walking the streets we found a beer shop and got three strong beers (cost about £1 each and they were big bottles). We were after food, however Miguel was a veggie! We saw a place making and selling Dose which miguel said were very good! Dose is like a pancake make with water and rice powder then u add spices and tomateo and other items to. We ended up eating our food sat on the street and drinking beer! Drinkin beer on the street is actually illegal! After several beers, the point came where mother nature called! Trying to find a toilet on the street wasn't easy , but then we were shown to a toilet...a local toilet for everyone that liked in the slums! U can only imagine how bad it was! While we were doing our business, a group of local slum children came to talk to us. Who actually spoke quite good English! Some how we spent the rest of the night playing badminton with the children!
It has been such a surreal and enjoyable day! Met some great people too!!
