Hi everybody! I’m here and it is amazing. It never really properly hit me that I was going to Nepal and I’m still not really sure it has sunk in fully still.
The flights were good but I slept for about 90% of it and missed two meals. I was just so exhausted I’m impressed I managed to sleep so well which is great because I’ve beaten the jetlag already. The time is currently 15:32 which I’m pretty sure means its 9:32 in England! The second part of the flight was INTERESTING (Bahrain- Katmandu) I was one of aprox 5 women on the flight and the only white western woman. This meant I got a lot of unwanted attention and had a lot of stares and even a camera phone thrust in front of me. I felt like some sort of alien. It worried me at first that the whole trip I would be treated in a similar way but actually as soon as I arrived at the airport I experienced the Nepal I was expecting- friendly and a lot more relaxed. I still get attention from a lot of locals but not really in a negative way. Most people are just amazed at my pale skin and light hair which is held in high esteem here.
I was met at the airport by my co-coordinator Chris who is a character, but a nice one all the same. He spends a lot of time warning me and talking about…tummy trouble. He has a really nice little boy who came into my room (uninvited) and started looking curiously at my things. He was most impressed with my soap…not sure why!? My room is good considering Nepal standards and is no worse than most people’s student houses in England. I have my own bathroom and shower with really hot water…so I’m happy.
The food last night was ‘ENGLISH’ chicken and chips. It was good but I’m still to try some authentic Nepalese cuisine. But I’m assured tomorrow is dhal day so I’m looking forward to that already. Tonight Chris is treating the new volunteers to a welcome meal along with the others who have been here for weeks already.
I’m still experiencing a massive culture shock but it’s a nice one! When I got into a taxi yesterday I saw monkeys just chilling out on the pavement! I also saw a cow parked in the middle of about 12 motorbikes! Indecently if you run over a cow in Nepal you get twenty-five year in prison….kill a child only twenty!
Well that’s all I have to say about my first 24hrs in Nepal, so far it’s been amazing and I’m looking forward to what I have planned on the trip. Tomorrow I’m going to the monastery to meet the head monk and my class of monks. I’m really nervous but excited all at the same time.
Bye for now!
Laura
