Said my goodbyes to the guys on the Gorilla truck and hopped back on board to meet everyone that will be travelling down to Vic Falls with me. The first stop was Arusha in Tanzania, which we used as a base camp to go into the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti.
The Ngorongoro Crater was absolutely stunning, by far one of the most gorgeous places I have ever been to! It was a steep climb up to the Crater, we even drove through the clouds, and then when we came out of the clouds we were at the rim, looking down into the plains and lake of the Crater. The Crater is 20km around and was formed by a volcano and is surrounded by steep mountains, the only animal that can't get into the Crater is the Giraffe due to the steepness of the sides.
We spent the morning game driving and very quickly came across a Cheetah hiding in the grass. We also saw Buffalo, Zebra, Elephants, Wildebeest, Black Rhino, Hartebeest, Hippos (doing somersaults in the water-so cute!), Hyenas, Vultures eating a dead hyena and a pride of lions. The lions spent alot of time around the truck keeping coolin the shade of our tyres. There were 2 males, 4 females and 5 cubs ranging from 6 months to 1 month old! We even saw one of the females chasing a rabbit (not quite a gazelle but it was cool to watch anyway!)
After lunch by a pool of hippo's, getting harrassed by birds dive bombing us, we headed out if the crater towards the Serengeti. We stopped off at Olduvai gorge, where some of the first human remains were found!
We then headed into the Serengeti where we saw more Cheetah and millions of Gazelle, Wildebeest and Zebra! On the way to the bush camp, in the Serengeti, we drove past some Baboons, everyone else was heckling them out of the window, I was just sat there quietly and they still decided to hiss at me! Primates really dont seem to like me!
Had a fairly uneventful night in the bush camp, just a few visiting hyena! We had a game drive out of the Serengeti to get back to Arusha where we saw the usual game and also a leopard (however, he was hiding in the tree again!). I also saw a really cool mirage, it looked just like a lake in the distance, but was just a mixture of the sun, clouds and heat!
Leave Arusha tomorrow to make our way to Zanzibar!
