monday 7th april
Flew form Brisbane to Cairns and met becky at the airport, was dead excited to see her and we havent stopped talking since! found our transfer to the Bohemia Resort hostel and then booked in and found our room wasnt anything swish but its a comfy bed and theres aircon!! went into town to sort a few things and had tea at PJ O'briens an irish pub.
wednesday
went on the skyrail to the village of Kurunda in the rainforest north of Cairns. was really pretty and took us up and over the rainforest and waterfalls. got off at the top and had a wander round the village and into the rainforest following a trail along a croc infested river eeeeek!!
went into a wildlife reserve thingy and patted walabies and saw crocs and a wombat ooooh ooooh ooooh and had a Koala cuddle was the best thing ever there so cute but its bum made my arm smell of poo for the rest of the day.
Caught the mountain train down was an oldy styly train a lot slower than the skyrail but still fun and it took us right into town.
made tea in the hostel and watched the movie Bad Boys 2 in the bar.
thursday
Up bright and early and headed down to the Marina where we boarded a catamaran sailing boat and headed off into the sea and onto the reef. id felt ill all morning not through drink or food poisining i was just scared of the fish, and scared real bad. i was hopping the boat ride would last forever and i wouldnt have to go out in the shark and fish ridden sea, but no after a 2 hour sail we arrived at the mooring. got my flippers and snorkel on and borrowed a noodle haha they keep you floating if you panic which i thought id be doing plenty of, and then i jumped in!!!! i snorkelled above water untill we got to the shallower reef as i didnt want to see what was lurking in the deep. i lost becky so snorkelled with a german girl who was scared too and tried to swim in the middle of people so if a shark came he'd get them first haha. didnt actually see a shark and i was so unbelievably relieved.
the reef was amazing though not as colourfull as i expected but still amazing. and there was all kinds of fish and i totally lost my fear. saw a Nemo fish was buzzing, then there was metallic blue ones, crazy yellow ones and starfish and sea cucumbers and clams bigger than me, i was definatly glad i got in. found becky eventually and she gave me the fright of my life as she was in front of me but her flippers were still under me and she touched me and i freaked out cos i thought it was a fish touching me hahahahaha. swam back towards the boat for lunch and it was as if the fish knew as they were circling the stairs onto the boat looking for a nibble, they were huge bat fish that bite!!! anyway thought id just barge through them and jumped on quick. Had lunch followed by a leisurly sail and sunbathe on the nets over to the next mooring point.
did a bit more snorkelling and my underwater camera jammed grrr so have no pics of the reef at all was pretty annoyed.
the sail home was a lot choppier and we got drenched a few times, we were given cake and wine, i think my glass was 50% sea water and was gradually getting saltier and saltier after each drenching.
was an amazing day and id love to do it again.
friday 10th - checked out the hostel at some unearthly hour before 6 and got a taxi to the bus terminal where we hopped on our coach to our next destination Townsville. took 6 long hours but we went through some pretty scenic countryside. Arrived and checked into Globetrotters which was pretty scanky but for one night it was fine. had a walk round the town and the marina then had a shower then went for our free tea at the pub across the road. then a few drinks in a few bars.
Wasnt much to do in Townsville really and one night was sufficient.
sat - went to the beach for the morning leaving our packs at reception, then left for Airlie Beach at 1pm arrived bout half 6 and had to walk to the hostel as the courtesy bus was broke grrrr. along with we later found - the lights, the locks, the laundry, the kitchen, the computers, the curtains. yes Koala resort in Ailie beach is a dump!!! never mind it was a bed, ive been in worse army camps hmmm maybe not!!
Showered and changed then went into town to get some food, then went to a pub where we met some Aussie blokes who came from Newcastle over here. they were pretty crazy but a good laugh so we went to the next pub with them. had to be up early next day so we called it a night at half 11.
sun- Cruising the Whitsundays today was another amazing day. and definatly something i want to do again. we went to Long Island, South Molle and Daydream island which was my favourite. It was like paradise the beaches were amazing and the views fantastic. we went sea kayaking on Long Island which was muchos fun.
imagine the picture of paradise, a perfect beach, palm trees, parrots, mountains in the backround and then becky was hoiking up her guts behind a tree haha awwww
Got to stroke stingrays at Daydream island was sooooooo coooool. you have to put your finger in pretend its a prawn and then you tickle it between the eyes. they were massive probably wider than my armspan and longer than my height. also saw a Dorey fish from the film Nemo too, as well as reef sharks which were also huge and other fishy fishwhich were less exciting.
Had a massive lunch and then headed to the pools - too many jellyfish for the sea!.
On South Molle island we were attacked by parrots, they came swarming down for our melon and they were on everyones heads and shoulders and arms. Becky got shat on twice in her hair ahaha, theyve scratched my arms to bits and its unbelievably painful, looks like ive been slitting my wrists!! but was good fun. lazed by the pool and then we had to go home which was awful because we had to return to the dump :o(
had an early night last night and were just sat talking to the two blokes an aussie and a canadian in our dorm for a bit then musta conked out cos we woke this morning 10 hours later feeling refreshed
mon - got up, packed and checked out of the hostel. went to the lagoon and set up camp for the day next to our packs haha was pretty funny we looked like tramps on the beach. getting the overnight Greyhound bus tonight to Hervey Bay which takes 10 hours but saves us wasting a day and we dont have to get a hostel.
alll for now
muchos love xxxxxx
