monday 5th - up bright and early to the beat of the drum yet again. well werent so bright today though after being up all night and it was still raining. becky went on the caves trip with jamie and sarah, the others in our room. i sold my ticket to jamie as the idea of swimming underwater through tunnels to get to an underground cave in the pitch black with god knows what floating around beneath in the depths was not my idea of fun one bit and particularly not when i was tired. so i checked out but stayed and slept on my bed until the cleaner lady chucked me out and so i went and sat on a wet hammock in the rain and slept there instead.
had lunch and then the boats came to take us to the ferry boat and then off again onto the big yellow Wanna Taki, an overnight boat anchored just off Manta ray resort. never stopped raining so was pretty miserable, add to that the girls who had been on it a few nights ago left with bed bugs and add again the fact it was swaying side to side in the choppy sea and me no happy bunny.
brightened up a bit after our afternoon tea and instead of sitting moping about the rain we decided to jump off the top deck of the boat into the sea a number of times. was about a 7/8 metre jump and fairly scary the first time. think i was more scared of what was lurking in the fish ridden sea with its mouth wide open for me to jump into, than the jump itself. i made becky stay in the water while i juumped too, to scare the fish aaway.
showered, which is an ordeal here. i hate trecking towels. id rather drip dry than use them, no wonder they are claimed to be quick drying - they dont dry you in the first place. it just clags, grrrr i hate them.
had tea which was an all you can eat buffet then we played some cards and got chatting to the dive instructor and a few of the others on the boat then ring of fire started and went on and on and eventually everyone else was that drunk that they
were all shouting and nobody was listening so i left them to it and went to bed.
Turned out fine we didnt get bitten by bed bugs thank god but my bunk was right beneath the aircon and it was like the arctic. i got so annoyed at it in the night and tried to switch it off only it wouldnt work so i whacked it with my fist and as if by magic the cold air stops, but the control unit falls off the wall oooops. everyone was asleep so i got away with it.
May 6th
after a choopy nights sleep and being awoken by the chipmunk version of "ive had a bad day' playing throught the speakers we got up, had breakfast and almost everyone went back to bed. it was chucking it down so nothing else to do on a boat stranded in the sea.
watched a few movies then had lunch. boarded the ferry boat to our next stop which was Kuata an eco haven resort and the best island so far.
It had stopped rainning a bit when we got there so after dumping our stuff and catching up with katie and caroline from the last island we went for a walk along the beach and a bit of a rock climb to see what we could see.
had a shower then made our way to tea. but only after watching a kava ( a crazy fijian drink which has something it to make you hallucinate but only if you drink loads) ceromony was good to see but the guy looked like he was ringing his dirty socks into the mix. anyway we all had a try of it, and i can safely say never again. tasted like dirt, well how you'd imagine a muddy puddle to taste like. we both thought we'd only be getting a shot glass worth - an easy mouthful we thought, but no we had a bowlfull to down in one, a good 4 to 5 mouthfulls.
then we had a fijian meal which we had to eat with our hands. this included fish, more fish, unknown stuff - maybe fish, yet more fish and salad. oh yeah and rice which isnt the easiest thing to eat with fingers. not so keen on the fijian food on this island tis all a bit fishy and sloppy for my liking. i have tried everything i just dont like it at all.
played cards again since there was nothing else to do then went to bed.
wednesday 7th - awoke to the sunshine today and everyone was a hundred times happier. mark and carloline went snorkelling with sharks but we took full advantage of the sun and parked our butts on the beach for a morning of tannage.
after lunch it got a bit over cast so me and bec went on a trip to the village on a neighbouring island for a few hours. was pretty good to see and there was a jewellry and craft market on. bec did some weaving with the local women and made herself a bracelet id managed to come without money so couldnt afford to do it myself haha.
there was fresh coconuts too and we all drank the milk was yum!
waved katie and caroline off and then me and bec went on a summit walk through the rainforest to check out the island and surrounding area. was a good 45 mins up and we were sweating so bad cos of the humidity but we made it to the top and the views were amazing. made all the sweating worthwhile haha.
started getting dark so we headed back down the hill, i managed to slip on a log and went flying round a tree, slinging my bottle of water into a bush but thankfully not landing on my butt.
oh and did i mention we did this in flip flops- wasnt the best choice of footwear for a rainforest or a hill.
got back and showered and had tea. mark had gone sunset fishing so he was in a bit later. had dinner and played more cards grrr if i never see another pack of cards again it will be too soon
May 8th
got up and it was miserable again! had breakfast then becky went shark swimming! i chickened out again, i know im missing so many opportunities because i get scared but i was stressing about this one so much i didnt sleep the night before. so i gave mark my ticket and went for a walk along the beach instead.
i didnt regret this decision one bit though, as bec came back and said the sharks were bigger than her and were smimming between her legs and getting up close to her face etc. id have freaked. yeah they were only reef sharks, but to me a shark is a shark and im not being anyones dinner!!
started pouring down so i went and sat in the room till they got back then we had lunch and sat in the dinning room till it was time for our ferry.
next stop South sea whcih was amazing even in the rain. you could walk form one side to the other in a minute and everywhere you looked there was sea.
dumped our bags in the 35 bed dorm and headed downstairs to the bar for tea. stayed up chatting and playing silly get to know you games and hermit crab races then headed to bed praying for sunshine the next day.
9th - woke to find it was yet again still raining and no sign of stopping not only was it raining it was blowing a gale so i was really worried about being on Seaspray the huge yaught we were booked on but anyway it got cancelled and we all get our money back so not the end of the world but would loved to have done it on a gorgeous day. we headed back to mainland early since there was bott all to do on an island you can walk across in a minute and around in two.
the boat back was so choppy i actually lifted off my seat a few times. decided the floor was best. and i woke up when a guy stepped over me so must have Koncked out i guess.
went back to Nadi Bay resort, via the hilton, the sheraton etc oh to have that much money!! showered, dumped our bags, got some lunch, then headed into town with mark to the doctors again to get his wrist seen to, - the wrist he fell on looking for shells a few days ago - awww very macho activity!! wandered round the shops, went on the net then headed back on the bus.
mark and Jamie (a guy we met on the first island who ended up at our hotel too) went to macdonalds for tea and me and bec had a girly tea with michelle, the girl staying in our room. we chatted and had cocktails for a bit then went and watched NEXT in the tv room.
haha and bec got asked out on a date by this big chunky guy with dreadlocks.
sat 10th - today we arose early to see mark off, then headed into town. had a look round the markets and i bought some shoes for new zealand to keep my feet warm since i only have running trainers.
headed back to the hostel for a spot of sunbathing then had tea. did some laundry, packed had a cocktail and went to bed
sunday 11th - whooooop blue skies again so all we did today was sunbathe!
thought we'd get as much of a tan as possible before leaving since we'd had poopy weather on the islands. had tea, a cocktail then went to bed.
monday 12th - awoken in the night to a man coming in our room with a torch, he shone the torch on all the beds then left, then just as we were getting back to sleep another guy comes in our room dumps his bag has a shower etc - this is at about 2 in the morning! couldnt get to sleep for ages and we had to be up at 6.
got a taxi to the airport and checked in. we had the seats next to the emergancy exit with masses of legroom it was sooo good and we'd be first out if it crashed - bonus!!!
slept most of the way and whooop first destination where the sun has been shining. so we are now in Auckland New Zealand. caught the shiuttle bus into the city centre and found our hostel. we have a pretty good room but it turns out the Magic bus which we are using to travel down to Christchurch ( it isnt actually magic ) doesnt leave on thursday so we are going to cancell a night and leave wednesday. plus there isnt actually much to do here really.
had a wander round the shops and the harbour and we're going to make tea in a bit and have an early night we're pretty tired.
