Apparently beaches on the West coast of the Island are the nicest, so after hiring mopeds again, we set off in search for our perfect sunbathing spot. The first place we stopped had really nice views, but unfortunately was a private beach for the beach hut residents. As we were walking back to where we parked, I heard a 'hello'- it had come from a bird in a cage! He also said 'Sawatdee Kah' (Hello in Thai) and laughed but didn't say 'hello Alice' like she was prompting him to (I think she thought it would partially make up for Ruby nearly saying Lucy and not her name).
It took a few stops, and another fill up of Gasoline (whoever hired my bike the day before had really got the most out of what was left in the tank), before we found a 'secret beach', that had a statue of a mermaid by it.
Listening to the woman sat near us was quite informative; It sounded like she was a volunteer at a dog hospital or something, and she said that there was a family who owned a dog that had been warned so many times how dangerous it was, that if it ever attacked anyone, the locals would kill the owner! Apparently the police try and rule the island, but it's actually the locals who succeed.
We wanted to get to the Amsterdam bar for sunset, but by the time we had ordered our shandys, the sun had set behind a cloud. It was still a cool place to hang out though!
We stopped in Thong Sala for food, and stumbled across a café that looked like it was just an opened out version of her family kitchen. It took quite a long time (so I had a snack from the nearby food market of two sushi rolls and a chicken skewer with sweet chilli sauce) but it was so nice when it came- I had massaman curry which actually tasted like the Thai style curries we have back at home. It had butternut squash/pumpkin in it which surprised me as I thought that was just a western addition and peanuts (so there's a way to make it more authentic for you guys back at home!). I had a banana and Oreo milkshake for pudding and Alice had a pancake.
In the evening, we met up with Melissa from Sydney who we met in Chiang Mai in the floating bar quite near our hostel. We were originally going to go to the waterfall party, but a few people had said it wasn't as good, although it was playing some funky house type stuff which really isn't our cup of tea, so whilst Melissa and the Australians in her room went back, we decided to go to the waterfall party after all. Some famous German Techno DJ was playing so it was slightly more expensive than it usually is, but I enjoyed it a lot more than the floating bar!
