Feeling a bit spaced out from lack of sleep, we asked the tourist information office at the airport how to get to Kao San Road. It was going fine, and we had buddied up to a guy who was also going there so could share a tuk-tuk if necessary. But when we got off at Phaya Thai link station, a man told us we should go to the international booking office because bookings to Chiang Mai were booking up quickly because of it being New Year's Eve (I think I have déjà vu slightly) and because the bus to Kao San didn't leave from the station apparently. We booked the journey up there and it was quite useful to have Nils there (the guy we were getting the bus/tuk-tuk with) to ask for his advice. Everybody kept telling us different bus numbers to go on to get there, but the 204 was apparently not one of them, so we ended up caving in and getting a tuk-tuk. Nils is leaving in a couple of days' time so gave us his Thai SIM to ring the gashouse we wanted to stay in (it was in a quiet suburban place, and was a cheap private room so we could sleep well and not have to socialise by being a zombie).
We cut our walk to the guest house by stopping off for Israeli hummus and pitta which we later discovered was in the guide, although I'm not sure I would have recommended it!
We got ridiculously excited about the fact they had pay to use washing machines rather than a laundry service like they did in India, and it's so warm that our clothes are nearly dry after only a couple of hours.
In the street they have water vendors, so you can fill up your bottle for a fraction of the price it would be to buy a new one- we feel like we've learnt a lot about surviving in Thailand compared to how we felt on our first day in India.
Kao San road is full of touristy clothes stalls, food vendors and bars (one had a huge sign over it saying 'we do not ID').
We dithered about choosing where to eat, despite me already knowing I wanted Pad Thai. We opted for a sit down one near where we're staying, although the portion was very small so we bulked it up afterwards with ice-cream, and then various nutty sweets.
7-eleven seems to be a shop that sells everything.
I apologise for how fragmented this entry is- I'm feeling very, very tired!
