It was really weird waking up on my birthday, but thinking it wasn't actually my birthday until 10 (since I was born in England, and England is 10 hours behind Australia). I opened my gift from mum and dad, and my card from Grandma and Grandpa, and then me and Alice met Aaron, Emilie (the Swede), Emilie (the Kiwi), Bella and Dan at Fika, the Swedish café where Seb and Amanda from the hostel work, although neither of them were working when we went, as we went early so I could go before opening the restaurant. I had coffee, an espresso ball, a cinnamon bun and some gingerbread muesli with yoghurt, although it gave me a bit of a sugar rush when I started work, especially after eating my Swedish pick 'n' mix (with some help from Emilie on which ones to get).
It was just me, Alice, Josh and Allen today at lunch, and so both the managers kept popping out/into the office so it felt a bit like it was just me and Alice. We took advantage of this by playing the music we wanted to play. Allen gave me a box of chocolates that were lying around in the office, and Josh returned from the shops with a stuffed toy kangaroo that says 'G'day' and 'how's it goin'- something 'quintessentially Australian' as his girlfriend suggested when Josh had asked her what he should get me. Before he settled in Cairns, and was travelling alone, he had a stuffed toy sheep and took photos of it in iconic places, so I may replicate this with the kangaroo.
Alice and Bex had brought me a lamington cake, a card and some vodka, so I shared out the cake with whoever was around at the hostel. When I got back to work, Dane had made some custard and decorated a mud cake plate with 'Happy Birthday Laura', which I successfully managed to whisk away without anyone sticking sparklers in and singing happy birthday to me, which was then just ruined by Josh bringing out 3 scoops of ice cream with sparklers in. Even the kitchen staff came out to sing- very embarrassing! I had ages to spare before starting my shift, so I did one of the colouring in pages that we give out to the kids- it was very therapeutic and I thoroughly en joyed myself. Despite how full I already was, I couldn't resist taking home the salad that Josh had put through instead of a wrap.
Both Jake and Shannon mentioned something about a meteor shower that was supposed to be happening tonight, although when Bex googled it, the website she was on said it was last night- we didn't see any signs of it anyway.
