Just had my last week in Arutam and boy was it un poco loco! The indigenous communities in the South of Ecuador in the selva are protesting against a new law proposed by the government which completely eradicated their land rights and goes against Ecuador´s constitution!
Commencar muchos road blocks, face paint, turban style disguises and lots of guns and spears! We have been fine because we are volunteers and are thus on the side of the indigeous people so its been possible to travel around even though no buses or coaches have been running for a week! To get to Baños I walked, got squished into a tiny truck with 15 others, walked some more, got in the back of a fruit lorry and then finally made it onto a bus-which was promptly security checked by the police! And I was travelling with a member of the Shaur community and we were both wearing face paint...interesting times and slightly scary!
Three people have already been killed in the town abour 20 kms south of Arutam and its a no go area for everyone!
Viden la revolucion!
