Hi Everyone!!!
Okay, so the hospitality in Santorini has been absolutely stellar. Case in point, the wine sellar who pulled us in to his shop yesterday and gave us six different shots of varying wines and liquers. Yes, I've already had a try or two of ouzo... and can say I would rather be forced to drink tar for the rest of my life. I'm just not a fan of the black licorice taste, what can I say?
However, this man was a delight and has a website and we can order from him. We went back today, as a matter of fact, and did just that!!! I now have two bottles of wine on their way back to the states and I have a bottle of olive oil with garlic, onion and rosemary along with a bottle of vinegar on standby. I think the best was when we were in the shop looking at lava rocks and two ol' boys from the cruise ships that were obviously from Philly were taking a couple of sips of the wine, only to yell, "I'm gonna vomit!!!" Hahaha! It truly made my day.
So, two things of note in this little island: Donkeys and Owls. Donkey's are a preferred tourist way of climbing these streets as the entire island of Santorini is technically a volcano. Little Greek men sit in strategically placed corners and manage to nab quite a few people on their way towards the steps. I, however, am a bit more practical and am NOT a glutton for punishment so I opt for the ever-efficient cable car. The pictures are amazing and as soon as I have some uploaded, you will see them.
Beyond that, we've rented an ATV and have gone to Oia twice and driven to Fira once. Usually we just walk to Fira but we finally gave in and had to do some laundry before there was reason to avoid each other. We went back to Oia this evening and caught sunset on the edge of the island. And I've gotta say... my view is better from my hotel. However, before I get up on my high horse about this, I prefer a slightly more dramatic effect of having the sun going behind a mountain in the water as opposed to just going in to the water... and it was cloudy today so we never actually got to see it go in to the water... so yeah, my way's still better!
Anyways, we'll be heading over to the opposite side of the island tomorrow and we'll finally see the Black Beach. I'm pretty excited about this for a number of reasons... one, it's a black beach. Two, it's a BLACK BEACH!!! They also have a red beach and a white beach but I'm sorry, black wins.
So, I believe you've just gotten caught up! We did take a boat ride out to the middle of the island yesterday and climbed the hill they call "the volcano" which had to pay 2 euro for. It was a great photo op and I definitely se the appeal... but really, the entire island is the volcano... we just climbed up towards the center where they still had lava rock. That being said, the swim in the ocean and over into the hot springs was pretty awesome. Sadly, my bathing suit has a slightly browned look to it now but it was worth it.
And now, I think I'm going to go and sit and have a glass of wine... or get some food... I've been eating at very strange times these days.
I'll report again soon!!
