hello there! apologies for the delay in writing, but we have been super busy (lying on beaches, partying hard etc etc!!) so this wil be a long one....
the evening of the previous message we went to a jazz festival which was pretty good, these three boys from california playing their own compositions. we felt very cultured!! it was also a relaxing evening to prepare ourselves for the long journey with bamba the following day to palenque. it was an awesome day - see the photos - as we stopped off at agua azul waterfalls and had a quick swim, misol-ha 0 a huge waterfall with cave and the Palenque ruins. these ruins were the prettiest so far as they're in the jungle so very green and spacious. there was also a dramatic ending to the day when we were hit by a huge hurricane resulting in the loss of one eye (lara), unconciousness from trees falling (sal), an electrcity pylon in the ONLY exit from the ruins stopping the traffic in torrential downpour. LUCKILY we were saved by 100 men with machetes who appeared from random cars (obviously keeping machetes in cars is the normal thing to do!!!) abnd cleared the road and all were saved!! an early night was needed after this excitement however we did enocunter our first 'lizard in the bathroom experience'!
the following day (thurs) we went for the 6am start trip to yaxchilan and bonampak ruins. we had to get a boat to yaxchilan, a ruin site which was properly in the jungle then we had a tour from 'fernando'a really pervy mexican man who kept offering to warm us up in the air conditioned bus and give us cuddles etc. very funny though especially the long plait and moustache combo!!! he told us that in the self-sacrifice mayans blokes used to bleed from their willies as a gift to teh gods, and the women used to put a rope through their tongue and bleed from there!!! we saw some monkeys as well which was cool. bonampak hosts the largest collection of mayan art murals as well. night bus to campeche in eve.
we met some cool people on this bus and have been travelling with them since...all independent travellers from england, argentina and isreal which has been a lot of fun. went out in campeche in eve and danced some salsa! (well attempted to!!!). the sat we travelled from campeche (hungover) to tulum via chicen itza (disappointingly touristy and crowded), valladoid and a cenote where we got to swim (a cave). tulum was absolutely gorgeous (white sand turquoise sea) and we stayed in cabanas right on the beach so woke up and got to go swimming straight away which was so good. very pretty but down side was the amount of bugs and darkness as lights went out at 11 (and obv we were up later than that1!!) . had a midnight swim when we arrived. the next day was spent swimming relaxing and drinking! however the following day (monday) we visited the tulum ruins (so so pretty with a grgeous sea background).. sally and the lads decided to cycle in the heatwave but the 2 girls and i decided to stroll along the beach to the ruins (the more relaxing option!!!). went out in eve. travelled to playa del carmen in the eve.
this is where the blog ends as the rest of the trip has been spent swimming, sunbathing, dying of heat, sweating loads and getting absolutely annihilated every evening (obv the others bad influence on us!!) in playa del carmen as well as isla mujeres (where we are now). playa had some awesome clubs on the beach though. hopefully will get to do some watersports/ snorkelling tmw to miz it up a bit.
anyway we're off out for more drinks (again!!!) so hasta luego!!
