After nearly seven months away, I have now made it home, slightly sooner than originally planned, but glad to be home and looking forward to catching up with everyone.
My final couple of weeks in New Zealand were spent visiting a few places I'd missed on my first circuit of the South Island; a trip to Mount Cook, a village at the foot of the countries highest mountain with the same name and a stay in Dunedin. The weather also turned at this point and I became a little concerned by my summer wardrobe/backpack, so resorted to just wearing as many clothes as possible.
I caught a flight to Bangkok on Friday with the intention of spending 12 days in Thailand. I arrived around midnight, and with another backpacker got a taxi into the backacking centre Khoa San Road and managed to find somewhere to stay. Saturday and Sunday were a couple fo days seeing a few of the sights of Bangkok, we visited the Grand Palace and a reclining Buddah, had a trip along the canal, saw a house belonging to a man called Jim Thompson, wandered around a massive market and got caught up in a pro democracy protest. We also had a few trips on tuk tuks, which always seemed to involve stopping at tourist offices so the driver could get a petrol voucher, on one occasion the driver was nearly crying when he said the last place had not given him a voucher, so we had to stop at a second.
Sunday evening, I decided that I had had enough of Thailand, I wasn't particularly enthralled by Bangkok, and the thought of heading south to the beaches by myself was seeming less appealing. So I decided enough was enough, and got on the phone to change my flight to Monday. After a bit of confusion on my part when I thought it was 12.45 on Monday night, when in fact it was 12.45 Sunday night, 4 hours time, I got to the airport and was on my way home.
I've had a brilliant time travelling over the last months, without a doubt, the highlight being Tanzania and Southern Africa. I'm glad to be back in the UK, and looking forward to catching up with everyone. Job hunting starts now too!!
