Flat dogs is the local translation for crocodile. The camp is right on the Luangwa river next to the park which is not fenced and there are plenty of crocs! Like the other camps we have stayed in they tell you as you arrive that the animals make a regular appearance in the camp! Too right! At 4am I thank god again for the roof top tent as we watch an enormous hippo eat his way through the bush next to the car, he was about 1m away from us (close enough for me to see him without my glasses!) We did a morning game drive a met Gilbert the elephant just as we were leaving the camp. We were also spoilt for game in the park. Giraffe, Elephant, plenty of Hippos (there are supposed to be 40,000 in the river, that's one every 25m!!!!) Bush buck and Springbok, Zebra and lots of herons. The lions were also about but we didn't see them. On the way back in we saw another herd of elephants. Did your parents ever tell you off for running or stomping around upstairs and you sounding like a herd of elephants??? Well, I will have you know that they are actually really quiet and can sneak up on you without making much noise! I know this because after breakfast, back in the camp, the elephants decided to walk through! Gilbert was back he is the angry close up, and tried to mock charge us several times as we hid behind another car. They are quite scary close up! The elephants were also back later in the afternoon, and the hippos again last night. We were surrounded this time with one on each side, it was quite funny because they couldn't see each other as we were in the middle so one would start eating the bush then he would stop as he could hear the other one munching, then the other would stop and listen so the first one would start again and so on. Then at breakfast this morning Gilbert came in again to join an overland truck for cornflakes! J.P nearly choked on his coffee as a lady who was going to the bathrooms met him head on and ran squawking in the other direction! (At least I was more composed yesterday I just hid behind J.P!) We have some great photos so I will try to get them all loaded up for you, but the stupid African hampster wheel driving the internet keeps crashing so I will keep trying with the photos. Tony $140 is 70 quid (Even the keyboards don't have pound signs!!!!) Really sorry to hear you got robbed! Hope you and Kim are OK.
