The delta is basically a big flood plain … in the rainy season a lot of the little islands get flooded and the water rises in the streams and channels flooding the marshlands. Most of the animals that live there are happy in the water like the elephants. As the rains stop the water recedes and the islands become visible again. There is an abundance of fish as they are concentrated in the areas of deeper water, so the fishing season starts in the few months before the rains begin again.
8am flight from Maun airport. We were in and out of the airport in less than 2 minutes including security and on the tarmac meeting our pilot! (Very posh)J.P got to sit in the front next to the pilot and we took off to have 45 minutes of game viewing before arriving at Nguma lodge in the northern delta. The views were great we saw elephant and giraffe and lots of zebra and antelope. We also flew fast a low (a little scary) over the reeds for a bit before landing on the sand at the camp.We stayed two nights at the lodge whilst the car was being fixed. We spent the days out on the mokoro's (traditional wooden canoe type boats that are pushed through the water buy a poler, think Venice or punting on the Thames).A very peaceful way to see the water lilies and birds close up, if a little hot, its about 35 degrees atm.We saw a lot of kingfisher and fish eagles as well as plenty of ducks geese and heron! There were also crocodiles on the banks and we also saw some otters! We had a picnic lunch on one of the many islands and did a couple of game walks, seeing monkeys and antelopes and warthog. We heard the hippos again but luckily didn't bump into any or elephants. With lovely food and proper hot showers for the first time in ages! It was a great (very relaxing) couple of days.
