On Friday we went on a day trip to Pompeii! It was pretty cool but also sad to see several bodies preserved from the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. The few hours we were there were so scorching hot it sure felt like we were trudging through lava!
Then we headed to Naples to visit a museum then to the port to catch our ferry to Ischia, an island off the coast!
The boat ride was about an hour and a half and then we got to our hotel. Our hotel didn't have air conditioning (no surprise) or wifi, and our room had 2 regular beds and one bunked, I was on the top one. We were definitely in some cramped, hot quarters! The owners were friends of our professor and they were very hospitable!
Night one we went on a walk to cool off and had dinner on the one main road we found in ischia. We also found a bar with wifi so we could all call our parents and catch up with the Facebook world for a few minutes!
The next day we took a bus to Poseidon's Gardens on the island, an Italian resort type place with springs, pools, and beach access! It was so pretty! I've been to many beaches in my day but none on the side of a mountain so that was pretty neat. Something I found interesting was how short the "beaches" are here, they're about 3-5 yards of sand then the water, much different than home! Luckily I applied enough sun screen I didn't get burned!
That night we had dinner on the Main Street at a different restaurant, and went to lots of cute beachy shops. A lot of the girls from our group stopped at this store selling wines, liqueurs, pastas, spices, and all natural body and face scrubs-bizarre assortment! We all ended up buying the face scrubs because they worked so well in the demonstrations! Lol.
The next day was another free day so the four of us went to the beach near to our hotel! We bought four chairs and two umbrellas for the day, then got yelled at by some crazy Italian lady for taking her seats she owned (that didn't have her name or any markings on them, and also after we'd been using them for a good 3 hours). We ended up moving further back and the owner of the chairs/patch of beach were nice about it even though the lady was a whack attack. I applied and reapplied sunscreen about thirty times but still got sun burnt :/ such is life though! I was still red for our trip home today (Sunday) but what was more shocking was the ridiculous amount of freckles I acquired! After one weekend here I look like I did after a whole summer at Camp McConnell! When my mom reads this she'll understand the severity of that statement!
This morning we headed back to the ferry to take us to Naples and let me tell you that was an experience I don't wish to relive! The people on the boat were very pushy and impatient, if I knew Italian I would've told them all to calm down and work together because we all had a common goal. I've noticed this a lot in Italy especially on different forms of transportation, people want to get where they need to go at any cost and will shove until they get there. Clearly they were never taught to let people off before you push on, or that if we all file in a line it'll go faster than attacking one stair case as a mob!
The ferry seemed to sell an unlimited number of tickets because there were very few seats available, so smargs Jackie and I popped squat on the ground in an air conditioned spot after we got over heated standing out in the sun.
Alas our boat arrived in Naples, then we hopped on our bus for a three and a half hour drive back to rome!
This evening was spent recovering and relaxing.
