Semana Santa week
This whole entry is for Semana Santa week. The school was closed as it's an official holiday for the whole country and it's basically the celebrating of Easter. Semana Santa occurs everywhere in Central America but it's more famous in Antigua. So the whole week has mainly dealt with parades all around the city with Alfombras, Music, Incense the whole lot. We even had our own little procession up at the school and around Itzapa.
The Alfombras represent the flowers and palm leaves that Jesus walked over on his arrival in Jerusalem and they're all elaborate designs made from sawdust, flowers, plants and even fruit and veg, they are amazing and a lot of work goes into them. Streets where people live come out and make thier own. My host mum Chrsistina made about 4 in the one week. The processions themselves have men carry the float of Jesus and the women carry Mary with incense being waved around the place. It's certainly an experience.
